Where did you do yours?
I got my initial CCL in Louisiana but I'm moving to TN and the license will expire this summer.
Anyone know of you can renew and transfer states or do you start from scratch in the new state?

I'm in the eastern part of the state. The process is painless.

You take the class and then they give you a code. You go to a state web site and enter the code and pay the fees. From there you get fingerprints done at the same places that do prints for TSA pre-check. I did mine at the local private mail place. Once that's done just go to the DMV and they take the picture and make the permit.

TN Reciprocity

quote:

If a person with a handgun permit from another state decides to become a resident of Tennessee, such person must obtain a Tennessee handgun permit within six (6) months of establishing residency in Tennessee. All applicants, regardless of permits issued by another state, will be processed as originals. The applicant must be twenty-one (21) or is at least eighteen (18) years of age, and is an honorably discharged or retired veteran of the United States Armed Forces or is a member of the United States Armed Forces on active duty status and includes with the application a certified copy of the applicant’s certificate of release or discharge from active duty (DD214) or includes with the application a military identification card as proof that the applicant is on active duty member of the military, take a DOS approved handgun safety course, complete the Tennessee Handgun Carry Permit application, provide proof of U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Permanent Residency, pay the fee, and be fingerprinted.

I wouldn’t broadcast names of lax instructors. It’s appreciated but they are supposed to still be same hour class

Basically a tax. Every state should have constitutional carry.

several of the instructors I'm referring to advertise it and advertise that renewals come in at a later time

That’s bc the law doesn’t state a specific number of hours of class time for renewals.

Every 5 years you have to take the renewal class. Same class as everyone else. Only thing is you don't pay $125 for the permit. You just pay for the class. Send in the certificate and that's it.

so, at least down here, absolutely DO NOT get lifetime.

So you suggest people overspend hundreds of dollars simply to avoid filling out a 5 minute form? Considering most people who get the concealed carry license, or anyone for that matter, likely won't be buying more than a few firearms, that doesn't seem like sound logic. I'm going to laugh at all the ones emphatically saying not to buy the lifetime license if/when they go up on the price of the 5 year, which they will. The amount they currently charge for the five year doesn't even cover the administration expenses of the permit so they are bound to go up on the cost.

I also tell my students to NOT get the lifetime permit for a multitude of reasons. The biggest one though is that once you’re outside the 5 year window the reciprocity with other states becomes a gray area. They may or may not have any understanding of Louisiana’s lifetime permitting standards.

I also think Louisiana will be a constitutional carry state within 20 years but I would still advise getting the permit for reciprocity regardless of when constitutional carry happens.

The requirements for a renewal are the same as a standard class but there is no time requirement. I typically do a brief safety overview from the NRA pistol part to make sure my students have the fundamentals then I move on to the law and the other important legal information. But I don’t just sign off for people - I still require some hours of your time, just not an entire day.

Is there any info behind this? Have people run into issues, or is it just based on your concerns from your legal interpretations? Honestly curious.

what I mean is we just recently got the ability to buy a lifetime license.

I've had my license for 20yrs but before last year you had to renew every 5 yrs or whatever the timeframe was. Lifetime wasn't an option.

Like quite a few Louisiana laws regarding concealed carry, no legal precedent has been set yet to challenge it. But I don’t know of anyone who would want to be that guinea pig.
