Got a 3 year old and I really want him to spend some outdoors time. Hiking, outdoor play, maybe some hills or water (creek, river, etc). Place must have cabins for rent but otherwise no frills needed. I have no real experience but would like to start somewhere. Anyone have any recommendations? This would be a long weekend starter trip with family. TIA

Percy quinn state part has a bunch of cabins. Don't think any of them are really primitive though.

South Toledo Bend State Park.
Edit: You may want to book in advance. It's been a few years since we've stayed in state park cabins but we would always have to book way in advance for a weekend stay.

I Second Poverty Point. I live here and ducks are coming in. There are pelicans, cormorants all kinds of bird life, egrets, herons, etc. best thing is the eagles we see pretty often. Saturday one made s slow turn over the water behind my house about 40 yards and landed in a tree out in the water. Ospreys are here too.
There is a nature trail.
Poverty Point site is within 20 minutes. It’s a World Heritage site where there was once a prehistoric city. Highlights include a museum, Large earth works and the huge mound. You can walk it and/or take the little train ride.

Thanks to all for the tips. Another noob question, but why is it that LA state parks charge $175/night for cabins on a weekend but MS state parks charge more like $80/night? Is this just a state by state thing, or a reflection on the quality of the cabins? Didn't know if this was because of nicer amenities in LA, etc. Leaning toward Percy Quin because of the huge difference in weekend rate, but very interested in Toledo Bend because it seems nicer with more to do.
