My son has been itching to get out there with his new .22 since it’s summer and we live in a suburban area.

When in season, are the best locations? Is it possible to shoot dove right now?

Nothing in season for a .22 right. Squirrel spring season closed yesterday and the fall season will open back up the first Saturday in October. Dove opens first Saturday in September but I'm pretty sure it's shotgun only.

Take him to the shooting range at Sherburne WMA or Pearl River WMA and bring some targets.

Just be sure you have the necessary permits/licenses to use those facilities.

Lots of shooting in North Baton Rouge, something must be inseason...

But seriously if he wants to shoot, go to the shooting range

Is he wanting to shoot or is he wanting to hunt? Two different things. I bet he just wants to shoot and, given it is a million degrees right now, why not take him to an air conditioned indoor range for a couple of hours? Then grab a burger after. Easy ideal father son outing.

If just looking for some target practice, take the kid to the river batture and set up some targets there or somewhere that has an earthen backdrop so the bullet doesn't travel long distances when he misses.

A .22 projectile can travel well over a mile, even though it is not all that accurate over about 150 yards.

Do a little research and you'll see what I'm talking about. Even 150 is seriously pushing it with the drop of the bullet and you need to know how to compensate for that drop. Realistically, under 100 yards is ideal.

Well, certainly a lot more accurate the shorter the distance, but if you are a good enough shot and know how to compensate for the big drop of the projectile, I know I'd not want to take one even at 150 yards.

You're not going to hit something over 100 yds. without a scope-----at least I'm not if shooting with open sights.
