I fricking hate snubbies. They're just not fun to shoot at all. Long barreled ones are heavy and cumbersome. I prefer the 4-6" ones

I've shot lots of guns. I've shot guns my entire life. I still cannot control a snubby magnum and it tries to jump out of my hand every shot

I think a 4 to 6 inch barrel is going to be the best all around length range for bedside/range use.

Ruger GP100 .357 is nice too.

Probably going to settle in as a great balance of performance, price, reliability, ease of maintenance, durability.

Of course the Colts and Smiths (rightfully so) have reputations as nicer shooters, Rugers have gotten better in that regard. The Colt Python is truly the classic in the caliber (and very pricey). Smith offers "full" sized K, L and N frame .357s (if that is the caliber towards which you're leaning) - and the N-frame models come in an 8-round capacity - with Performance Center goodies, you're definitely going to flirt with or cross the $1000 mark, though.

But, a new GP100 with a 4" barrel - with some shopping, you should get under $700 and perhaps as little as $600, about the price you will pay for a Smith model 66 (K-frame) in .357.

You ever think about a 1911? Once you hold one, you fall in love. Not very practical, but dreamy

I'm going to see how much I fall in love with shooting my friend's 357. Want to have something very different for a 2nd piece.

I think it'll just be a matter of time for me to get more willing and comfortable to spend more on a gun.

They are hard to find nowadays, but a Colt .357 Python. Best revolver I have ever owned. Next on the list is a S&W .44 Magnum. Loud as a motherfricker and kicks like hell, but whatever you hit is going down with the first shot.

I personally like the S&W 686.

I have this in 4" stainless. Most accurate hand gun I 've ever shot. Shoots 38 spl. and 357 mag. Paid $300.00 for it about 30 years ago.....should have bought more.

Whatcha gonna do with it?

If you just want a fun gun, get one of the big rugers in .44 or .454 casul. It's always fun to be the one making the biggest kabooms at the range.

Ruger .44 but go with a Bisley or Vaquero. The blackhawk is too oversold. I have both, but the Bisley is more fun to shoot. It is a hand cannon, and not for the weak or timid. Good luck!

You may know this, but if you don't it's worth knowing.

A .357 can shoot .357's and .38 specials.

38 specials are generally lighter loads, a little less expensive and more fun to shoot at the range and work on your skills.

Then load up the .357 ammo to shoot the bad guy or at least the muzzleblast will probably scare him off (and your neighbors.)

I have 6" s&w, K frame Model 19 (I think it's called.) It's cool to shoot, but really too big for household wars. If I were to do it again, I'd get a 4". My trigger has been worked, and it's a blast to shoot.

I have a 1911 also. Sometimes the simplicity of a revolver is appreciated.

Good luck.

Edit: Model 19 not 66

Go S&W in .460 XVR. Can go down to .454 Casull and .45 Colt.

I have a S&W 66-2 and 686 in .357 mag. The first has a 2" and the other has a 6" barrel. I like the snub nose more. It's fun as heck to shoot, IMO.

RedHawks are great but the triggers leave a lot to be desired. Super RedHawks are ugly as sin, but can be had in .454 and nobody cares how ugly a gun is when it's spitting out those things and holding together. I think they still make it in .480 ruger which is a very cool caliber. It's less of a fire breather than the .454 but launches 400+ grain stuff.

Smith and Wesson model 10 in 38 special.
Standard issue for deputies and officers for decades.
You won't spend a fortune, but you will get quality. Comes in a caliber that's easy to find, cheap and fun to shoot. Comfortable in the hand and reliable.

My second vote goes to either a Colt SAA, or a clone of one in 45 Colt.
Fun to shoot, badassness of a big chunk of lead without the flinch inducing mess of a 44 mag. Could be used for hunting at ranges shorter than the 44 with proper barrel length.
I don't own one, but will possibly be my next gun. Single actions are FUN.
