Best method of removal?? Was thinking poison but don't want dead rats up there, even though they are supposed to go to water, not sure how often they make it out. Snap traps maybe?
Cant tell how they are getting in either, frustrating

Good ol snap traps baited with pecans? Always worked for us growing up.

Classic Electronic Rat Trap.
Cleanly and quickly kills rodents with an electric shock.

Set traps and check daily. Avoid the poison.

Look up the 5 gallon bucket trap. Plenty of DIY videos.

Snap traps will work fine. But you need to figure out where they are getting in at and seal that spot. If not, they will keep getting back in due to smell that the other rats have left behind.

Least of problems. Who cares as long as they're dead!

Do not use the poison. I have not had a single experience where it didn't cause the rats to either die in the attic or in the wall.
Set traps for them, and make sure to close off all exterior entry points. Cut back big honking bushes, and get rid of piles of shite if they are near or next to your house. Also, go through your attic, and make sure there isn't anything in there that they want to eat

Put some snakes up there. Problem solved.
I didnt do this on purpose, however, I found snake skin and havent had a mouse problem so seems to have worked for me

I use peanut butter with a little honey on top. I also wear rubber gloves when handling the trap. Sometimes they are a little sensitive to smells.

I had a king snake that lived under my old house. A contractor was under there one time and asked me if I wanted him to kill it. I said hell no. I never had a mouse or rat problem.

Have read it's best to put out several traps (along walls and corners) all at once, rather than hoping to get them a few at the time. That they learn to leave traps alone rather quickly.

snap traps have not been good to me. the mice i have around my house must be really smart because they get whatever I put on the trigger off without actually triggering the trap. Its really amazing. I even tried the traps that are enclosed and never caught one...had 10 of em out. I ended up putting a bunch of poison in attic and only had one case of bad smell but it seemed to eliminate the problem for now.

Update, 1 rat down! Big mofo too, used the big Victor snap trap with creamy peanut butter, lots of blood, pretty sweet

If you have a lot of insulation especially blown in, which you should, I highly recommend tying the traps down. I've used zip ties around the beams. There's nothing worse than going through 18 inches of blown in insulation on a hot weekend morning to find a 3 day old dead rat. Those big boys will flop around and/ or run off with the traps.
