We planted this weekend (wish I could of waited another week but had help and equipment lined up), dry as it has ever been for planting , but looks like a little rain in forecast mid week but the beginning of next week looks like decent chances for several days!!!!

I have been dragging my feet this year as well. Haven’t chopped yet hoping to get that done Thursday-Friday. Woods are so dry I was able to bush hog some areas I couldn’t get to before

Everything was bush hogged, disked, & waiting. Had the equipment, 6000# seed, and help all ready and got planted this weekend. Now fingers crossed. Had to load up disks with water barrels to get them to cut into this hard arse dirt.

Do you guys cover the seed with some type of drag or cultipacker OR just leave it to let it germinate on top of the ground?

Y’all put fertilizer out the same as seed or wait a couple of weeks after the seed pops?

I couldn't bust though with the small discs I have. Hopefully I'll be able to go get it disced up after the rain and plant before the next one.

This is what we do but just like cooking a gumbo you will get a lot of different methods.
We have a homemade drag that is some old iron with some chain link fence that we drag over after seeding.
We then spread fertilizer immediately after.
I have helped some guys plant that mixed fert and seed in the same hopper and slung both, it seemed to do ok.

Planted mine a month or so ago. Growing well but needing some rain. I’m in north MS.

I have an 8ft x 8ft drag harrow from tractor supply. Ill disc, drank the harrow, spread seed and drag the harrow again.

Planted mine Friday. Went to the CO-Op and bought fertilizer and seeds for 3 acres....$500. I don't know how farmers are making it.

I didn't cover this year just broadcast on top of disc ground. I put 200lbs per acre of8-8-24 out along with 400lbs pelletized lime.

I usually disk my plots in September after a rain event. This allows my disk to bust through the hard pan and keeps the plots from getting too compacted. Then, the weekend that I plant, I disk a 2nd time and pull a 8 ft. chain link fence gate behind my disk to smooth things out. I broadcast my seeds and fertilizer and drag it again to cover the seeds. I decided to wait another weekend or 2 before I plant. Hoping for rain in the near future.

Mine is all cut, disked, and just waiting for seed on Tuesday. After seeding I'll pull my homemade drag, 4ea 4x4 held together with 3 ft all thread between each one, drag is about 8 ft wide and 8 ft long

fwiw it also looks like another dry spell behind this solo rain event, which has burned me in years past

Things are looking good for me to plant Saturday in North La, 60% chance of rain Sunday.

Another guy on the lease tilled up my plot for me a couple weeks ago. I don't normally cover the seed after planting, I just throw the fertilizer on it. But I may drag something over it this year just to try something different.

Planted yesterday, north area 9. If the rain doesn’t come through Wednesday then we’ve got a 500 gallon tank and will water by hand for a bit if we have to, but hoping for rain soon to save a little cash on pulling that thing back and forth. Threw out blinds this weekend too so they can air out, probably head back Sunday and place them in their winter homes.
We fertilized with the seed, usually like to do lime/fertilizer a couple weeks apart, but this year it’s just going to be what it’s going to be.

shite…how much land?

We’re chopped and ready. Gonna let it rain, then hit it with a disk again and plant before the next rain.

Good luck, glad you got some rain coming. For me, a little rain in the forecast for Sunday in North Central 'Sip, but not much other than that.

like previously posted, everyone does it different and really no right or wrong way....but i mix fertilizer and seed at the coop and load into a buggy and pull it behind a tractor and broadcast all at once over soil that has been disked and tilled, then come back the same day and run a chain harrow over it to cover the seed, then perform multiple renditions of ancient Indian rain dances

if i had a cultipacker i would use that, but I dont and the plots always do well regardless

I think most people do what they do with food plots based on equipment available, but most of the seeds we plant would come up on the tailgate of your truck if you left them alone long enough
