What would be the OB’s top pick for a rifle in a tree. We are talking in the 100-120 yards max, and 75-100 is probably more realistic max yardage. Point me to the answer if this has already been answered, but I feel like OB’s thinking might have changed since it was last discussed.

*Chamber?
Barrel and over all length?
Brand (custom or local hunting store brand)?
Bolt, lever action, semi or on an AR platform?
Scope?
Which suppressor and length if optional?
No suppressor?

I am getting itchy on getting a gun for a tree instead of a normal length gun or longer customs and a different gun would be used for field/longer range hunting.
* If 300BLk is you pick, what ammo in subsonic at roughly 100 yards for best expansion and pass through?
P.S. let’s try to keep it in the 5-7k range, if possible.

Huh?

$5-7k price range?

A "tree gun?"

300 BLK?

Just get a Ruger American Ranch or Savage Axis in 350 Legend or 450 Bushmaster along with some decent glass ... and move on with your life. It's not that hard. Even .308 or .270 or .243 Win.

We going Subsonic or not on that Rancher .350 Ledgend and what about your suppressor? A suppressor helps when shooting 80-100 deer a year.

I don’t think I have ever seen or know of anyone that has a Rancher. I only have experience with their 10/22s. I do like that option with a good suppressor and good optic for way less than 5k. Thanks for starting my day off great, even though it sounds like you were haveing a rough one.

As most of my hunting is done from a climbing stand, my set up is a 16” 450 Bushmaster AR and has been for roughly 8 years now. It has been devastating on deer and several unlucky hogs over the years. Short, light, can be slung in the front comfortably while packing a climber in and out of the woods and packs one hell of a punch. Picked up a Griffin Armament Bushwacker 46 suppressor for it last year and I couldn’t be happier.

A rifle for a tree doesn’t need to be any different than a rifle for a box. Don’t overcomplicate it.

However, to me, the shorter the rifle, the better, regardless of whether it’s a tree or a box.

You didn’t mention single shots. If you’re looking for a compact package, that’s an excellent choice. A Ruger no.1 with a 22” barrel is a very compact package.

If it’s compact you want, then you probably don’t want to add a suppressor. If you do want a suppressor, you want to find a rifle with a 16” barrel like the Ruger American ranch that was mentioned. Remington sps tactical is also a good choice for that.

As far as scope, a leupold VX-3 2.5-8x36 would be the perfect size without limiting you on farther shots if necessary.

CVA scout 2 in .35 whelen, the blued one without the bull barrel.

Enough gun for anything in North America, very light and compact, can be used during primitive season. It doesn't make sense to get anything else.

I wouldn’t worry about using subsonics. A suppressor on a bolt action will do everything you need it to do to protect your hearing.

As for the ruger American, the 30-06 I have is very accurate, despite the cheap stock. The factory trigger is great too.

The new RemArms Remington 700s now come stock with a timney trigger too, but they still come with that awful hogue stock. That won’t matter for shots inside of the range you’re talking about though.

Excellent suggestion. This would probably be the most versatile gun you could get… as long as you don’t mind a little recoil.

Something less violent like .35 rem or .44 magnum or 350 legend if you're only shooting deer at 100 yards checks those same boxes as well. Way less recoil.

The caliber doesn't matter much. The rifle is where the handy part comes in. Get that, put a 2.5-8 leupold vx3 on it, you'd have an ultimate rifle for that.

I use a single shot cva 35 whelen when sitting those places. If you’re not completely steady there’s a lot of forgiveness in 225gr accubonds.

My brother has a BAR in .308 with a low fixed power leupold, I forget the model. 40” overall so very handy. This with the rest of the budget spent on the best glass you are willing to buy is a great option.

Truth be told the best rifle I own for this and maybe period for whitetail at reasonable ranges is an old rem model 7 in 7mm08. It weighs next to nothing and is under 40”. Been several times I’ve grabbed it over my big rifles cause it moves around in a box stand so well, is a joy to carry, and drives tacks at 100 yards. If you felt like giving the new Remington a chance that’s a great option to consider and is a good one to have in the collection for kids and women.

any quality rifle in a carbine model; I would stay within the old fogey "boring" calibers, 30-06, 270, 30-30, 308. Plenty of ammo options to see what the barrel "likes" for accuracy. Always stocked somewhere. for a scope, get a 1-4 LPVO scope. Suppressor adds length if you're trying to stay compact.

Lever gun in 45-70 has been my go to.
1895 Marlin for me.
Can shoot loads from not having much more power than a .22 to nearly low end elephant gun strength. Very easy to reload for also.

I have been itching for another as well and just about have it narrowed down to the following.
Zermatt bighorn action
20in carbon proof prefit barrel in 308
Stockys ultra carbon stock
Lpvo probably trijicon
Price will probably be around 2500-3k $ but I will then have the ability to swap the barrel/bolt/scope and take advantage of having a lightweight mountain rifle in 6.5prc or 300wsm
It’s kind of my last gun to do all even though I know it won’t be!!

Just go to Walmart or Academy and buy whatever 30-06, 7mm-08, 308, or 270 they have in stock. Put a quality scope on it. It will do this all day with good ammo.

I’ll get downvoted on this, but only because so many have $5k tied up in a rifle they bought to shoot deer at 100yds.

I'm digging it except I would personally go with a Seekins Havak Pro Hunter 2.

I can't wait until my Thunder Chicken gets out of jail.

Takes more than 10:44 to give me a hangover.

For some reason I thought y’all shot a lot of custom guns. I am wanting to put a suppressor on it and that means the barrel needs to be short. 16” tops and overall length, with roughly a 6” suppressor, would preferably be shorter than 40”.
That might need to be a custom job or like some have mentioned the Rancher fits that pretty close. There could be better options also. I wouldn’t mind using subsonic rounds IF they are reliable. I don’t know where that technology is right now.
It could be that AR platforms would best fit what I am looking for.

I asked because I figured there would be multiple options that I hadn’t heard of, like the Rancher by Ruger. I had never seen or heard of it, but I have only been around/shot Remington, Browning, Tikka, Cooper or Custom guns in regards to rifles to hunt big game.

I’m either duck hunting, in a tree or box stand from basically beginning of November until the end of January. It isn’t over complicating it. I bet most people here have smart phones when they don’t really need one, but it is a luxury we choose to have. People busting balls about possibly spending UP TO 5-7k on a gun when they should be adding up all the money they have spent on Cellphones the last 5-10 years.
