I see this popping up often, so I'll just put a bulletin out. If you get a delay on your background, 99% of gun shops will release the gun to you after the 3 business day hold that NICS requires. So if you try to buy a gun on Monday and get delayed, you can go back and get it on Friday

Academy does not do this. They will only release the gun when they get an express follow-up approval from NICS, which doesn't happen often. Most of the time, the 30-day validity period of the 4473 will expire and you will have to do another one, which will get delayed again.

If you have a non-lifetime CHP, you just fill out a 4473 and there is no NICS check, so buying at Academy is not an issue. Otherwise, go elsewhere. I've seen a few people on here state that they've been instant approvals up until recently, so it's not worth the risk.

I still buy from academy on occasion, but I’ve never been delayed anywhere. Hopefully I didn’t just jinx myself as I’m about to go pick up an FFL transfer at my dealer later today.

Thread highjack,
You have any hellcats over where you at?
If so I’m on my way?

Upvoted.

I'm not in the buying market for new guns anymore, I'm more of a used/surplus guy. Best market for these are usually online, which requires a FFL transfer (with fee). I've been delayed probably over a third of the time. Absolutely sucks to hear Academy would hold my purchase beyond the 3 day period. Since you're working in the field, are you hearing why they do that? Being a chain, maybe? Liability?

My best transfer experience is my range, I've got a family membership. I'm on friendly terms with their smith, and he looks over the guns as they come in. And if/when I get delayed, they let me shoot the guns, I just need to leave it there until it's been released. And price for member is $20 for a transfer. So even if I could find a cheaper, being able to shoot it and have a set of experienced eyes check it out is worth the price.

A big reason to have it. Love that part of it. I have moved since I got my CHP so the address on it isn't the same as my current address ( I updated with the state but they don't issue a new card). I had one dealer who called in the check because he said my addresses didn't match. That has only happened to me once.

sorry baws, I'm not at Bowie's anymore. I think they're out of the vast majority of handguns over there. Worth calling to see, 766-1200.

I have moved a couple times since I got mine. The first time a couple years back I was told I would not receive a new card. But when I moved again a few months ago I submitted my change via email and got a reply saying the change was made. Then a few days later I got a new card in the mail.

Whenever I purchased a gun after my first address change I just showed the retailer my confirmation email from LSP showing the change. I never had anyone need to call to confirm.

If you got delayed at Academy, could you still go to a local shop later that day and try to buy from there? Or will a NICS check from Academy that gets delayed prevent another shop from running a NICS check until the Academy one is resolved?

Had probably 6-7 NICS checks run in my life (one from Academy) and never had any delays, so just curious

you could try, but you would likely be delayed again

usually if you always get a Proceed, you're good. but i've seen people saying they started getting delayed out of the blue this year.

But if you got delayed again, you'd likely be able to go back and pick it up from the gun shop after the 3 day period right?

Possible that the system is just backlogged because covid and all the rioting has prompted more people to buy guns than usual?

Correct. Wouldn’t be stuck in the cycle like you would at Academy

What happens if/when Academy then clears you... are you stuck buying that gun too?

I ask this, having never NOT already purchased a gun I'm waiting for. Ordering online, I've already paid. Can't remember in-store, if I paid prior to the background check or not.

BTW, don't they automatically flag you if you do more than 1 4473 in a week?

no. just dont go back for it when they call you to tell you, just say you dont want it anymore

ive never known a place to do this. usually you dont pay anything until the Proceed card is filled out and the gun is at the registered. they wouldnt want someone to pay, get denied, then have to refund the money

I bought my first pistol over 39 years ago. Couldn’t tell you how many I’ve bought and sold over the years. Bought a CZ 75 at a new local gun shop - couple of weeks ago, got delayed for the first time. The gun store guy called the next day, and said he got the approval, so I could pick up my pistol.

Yeah, I bought 1 gun at Academy years ago. I'm sure it varies, but their firearms staff at our store is underwhelming and seem unenthusiastic about their work. In other words, the opposite of your typical local gun shop.

It might actually be my favorite part of it. Way cooler than not going to jail if the wind blows my shirt over my pistol.

Must be different at different locations. I bought a rifle that I got same day. Also a sidearm.

Last one was my 30/30 but that was about 2 years ago.

On top of that youre supporting a local business. I try to do that as often as possible even if I am out of town and will never be back. Its damned difficult to make a go or almost any local business and without those businesses all you got is fricking walmart...
