Nope. That's all I shoot during blackpowder and it drops deer in their tracks.

9mm bullet in a 30-06 case. This thing is a beast - very “primitive”

Buy the heaviest rifle you can find. That is a punishing round on the shoulder

I concur. Mine is relatively light and kicks like a mule. Still love the gun though

Does Mississippi only require you to purchase the primitive license ?

Yes have to buy primitive endorsement but on private / leased land it’s weapon of choice during all seasons except archery. I hunt with a modern rifle for damn near five months...

So the rule is anything straight walled .35 and up, single shot?

I have 45/70 and 35 whelen. 35 is better round, but I prefer the 45 handirifle over the 35 cva. Heavy brush, get 45/70, over 100yds, get 35. I much prefer the handirifle(which they no longer make) if you can find used.

Exposed hammer as well. So no ruger no.1 type rifles.

You probably meant to say “straight-walled and .35 and up” since 35 Whelan is a bottle-necked round.

Just wanted to clarify a potential confusion.

.444 is a good option as well. I shoot one and love it. It's an H&R handi rifle. Drives tacks. If I'm not shooting further than 150 it's normally what I carry instead of my .308. If the bullet hits the deer, it's dropping.

I have buddies who shoot the .35 whelen and love it. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the calibers mentioned. They will all kill the piss out of deer.

Doesn’t have to be straight walled, just .35 caliber and up breech loading if cartridge. Black powder is obviously still allowed but has taken a back seat.

.45/70 really is a fine cartridge. Nothing wrong. .35 whelen is just better in every aspect. It has a flatter trajectory and more energy (unless you get +p .45/70 ammo which will still have more drop and way more recoil than .35).
