Guy had something killing his chickens so he set a trap and caught a spotted tailed quoll which were thought to be extinct in southern Australia for roughly 130 years. Last known sighting was in the 1880’s.

Looks like a short haired possum.

Very cool story never heard of them. Only ‘locally extinct’ with over 14,000 still alive elsewhere. Looks like a wicked mean animal though.

pretty cool looking critter.

Do they not consider dingos to be native in Australia? The article said that the quoll is the largest native carnivore left there. IRRC dingos have been in Australia for 5k years or so.

They consider dingoes feral because they believe they were brought there originallyas domestic dogs. I know this only because I listened to a pretty good Meateater podcast on my way home from New Mexico Monday. Episode 466 Direwoles and Ancient Hunting dogs.

No, very few placental mammals are native to Australia, even the Aborigines have only been there for about 50,000 years. Dingo's were brought there by Asian seas farers about 5,000 years ago.

In southern Australia, so was a locally extinct thing.

I think a lot of people are missing the southern part in that statement. They were not thought to be extinct, just in that region. They are threatened however.
