Did there used to be some type of powder pack right behind the broad head on arrows?

Seems like I remember my stepdad having these.

What was the powder for?

Poison that's used to kill deer. Was banned in the 80s I believe. Still pop up for sale every once in awhile if you associate with redneck fricks who live off disability, but that's neither here nor there.

Tictin or Anectine, used to poison/paralyze deer. Illegal now.

Tara Wildlife in Vicksburg actually recommends you shoot them at their lodge. I forget how much they charge per pod but they install them for you. I guess they have a license.

I have seen some shots on TV where I would swear they are using it. Shots that would result in either a lost deer or a 1,000 yard track for me, yet we see the deer fall.

As a kid I hunted in a lease with a few of the worst shots with a bow you ever wanted to see they killed several deer a year with them. They would wear surgical gloves prepping them not sure if that much care was needed but sure scared the crap out of me.

I grew up in a hunting club east of Natchez, and pretty much all the bowhunters used poison. Only problem was, anytime they killed a nice buck with a bow, they would put a polaroid on the wall with the name and date and the arrow they used hanging from tacks on the wall. After years, all the walls in the camp were covered with poison arrows will youngins like my self running around and knocking them off the walls. Looking back on that and stunt driving 3-wheelers in the middle of the day, I'm lucky I'm still alive I guess.

Giles island uses them as well. It’s a grey area of the law in Mississippi. It’s not illegal to hunt with them but it’s illegal to purchase the powder.

Can get the actual pods at any bow shop, just the chemical is illegal.

My dad said he knicked a spike in the leg with one and it ran 50 yards and died. My mom also had to bail him out of jail 2 weeks after they got married for possession of a controlled substance (anectine) and goin help a guy get a deer he shot the day before season.
