It's a bit simplistic, but it's tough as nails and shallow enough. Our Campagna skiff, new paint job and all...

When we got it repainted we converted the livewell in the middle to dry storage. Obviously this is in booze cruise mode.

Be careful with those skimmer skiffs, especially if it is one of the hulls built by Brad over at the now defunct IPB. Bonefish boats retooled the hull so they should be good to but I've seen some major issues in the earlier hulls.

heard the same, which is why i'm looking at a brand new one that i have a hand in customizing.

it's a good price point for what you can get, and the newer design and build doesn't have the issues of the former IPB build/design.

thanks for the insight.

Have you looked at Harry Spear's boats? Or Cayo? Harry Spear is a legit pioneer in the world of skiff building and he builds a damn nice boat for what he charges. Cayo made the move from building highend fiberglass SUP's, also a very nice skiff.

Bumping a very old thread. Looking for a new project to do in my spare time post deer season while my kids are still young enough we aren’t booked up every weekend.

Strongly considering buying a bare bones Carolina skiff j16 or similar (open to suggestions) , and building/ converting it into a flats boat/poling skiff.

I’ve done a bit of research and know j16 doesn’t pole very well, but tbh I’d be mostly running the trolling motor anyway. The allure is obviously the entry price- can be found in LA and Fla for less than $5k with a running motor, and the chalmation in my blood has some sort of deep affinity for Carolina skiffs I can’t shake.

background: I have super quick access to hopedale and shell beach marshes without crossing open water, and we have 24’ bay boat and 21’ Carolina for that anyway

Anyone have any budget friendly builds they care to share pics of? Or tips and suggestions when shopping?

Check out Microskiff.com

Any and all types of small skiff builds, photos, dicussion, ideas.

There’s an intriguing “starkey” skiff hull for sale on FB for $2k right now. Could be a fun skiff with a 40hp tiller.

I used to follow this guy on YouTube and he's a fairly popular LA fisherman who fishes the march but also some open water. He did a video on why he bought his poling skill, the Ankona Cayenne, it's here
LINK

They are made in a family owned small fab shop in southern FL.

My dad’s 16 Carolina skiff floats super skinny. Only issue is it’s loud in ripples.

I would find a pointy front boat shaped something like a Pierre Part skiff.

Fixing up boats is fun. Best of luck.

I have an Ankona Copperhead (Gen 1) and I love it. I am sure this is some owner bias, but I believe it is the best skiff for the money on the market.

Up until a year or so ago, Ankona was pricing hull only models in the $10-12K range. Its no longer on their website, but its worth a call to see if they will still do one for you.

I would never recommend what I am doing to anyone that isn’t absolutely obsessed with the idea of building a boat. But I’m enjoying building a Chris Morejohn designed poking skiff.

One other thing. Since you say you really won’t be poling, usually the main shallow water restriction is the trolling motor. The normal trolling motor prop needs about 10.5-11” of water to operate.

On my 24v minkota, I swapped the prop with a 4 hp plastic outboard prop with a 6.5 inch diameter. My poling skiff floats is about 7 inches fully loaded with 2 people so it’s a perfect match.

There have absolutely been weeks and months where I’ve thought “what did I get myself into, there’s no turning back now.”

Why aren't these boats more popular in Louisiana?

How did I miss this thread? Anyway, I own one and I would say they aren't more popular in Louisiana because:

- Polling here is not very easy, you find yourself dealing with the mud far too often.
- They are far more expensive than other boats that can do almost the same thing.
- Because of the previous point, upkeep is more expensive.

I remember one day at the launch someone telling me they loved my boat but could never deal with being afraid they'd mess it up.

I also think there's an aspect where people don't fully know these boats capabilities. So I did say other boats can do "almost the same thing" with almost being the key word. If you watch any of my videos, I can sneak up within inches to red fish because my boat is so quiet. I can also float in about 4" of water. Other boats that can do that are loud, use a surface drive, or something like that which spooks way more fish.

But, the reality is do people need to do what my boat can do? In Louisiana, not really. Fish are everywhere here, the only people that do what I do are those of us who are obsessed with it.
