I built a poling platform and a grab bar for a skiff this weekend. What do you think?
Both are going off for black powder coating next week.

Looks good, what type of bender?

Very nice. You got some skills. Why powdercoat it? Will the salt eat the aluminum up that bad?

I have a JD2 model 32 that I added a hydraulic pump to. Works great, you just have to be very diligent with your measurements!

The powder coating is mostly aesthetic. I built this one for someone restoring a skiff.
This is 5086 aluminum pipe so it won’t corrode. I agree in general that aluminum should be left bare for long term performance.

How do you plan to use the two hatches you covered? Going on a different boat?

Looks great. Mind me asking what you charge for something like that? Or is it a friend deal?

It’s going on a different boat. I just wanted to see how it looked on my small bay boat.
$1200 for the pair not including powder coating.

Glad I read this thread. I've been bender shopping for a few weeks and that looks absolutely perfect for what I want to do. Hopefully I'll have me a good little side gig going here soon

Here’s my advice:
1. Get the Delrin wiper dies so you don’t gouge the aluminum.
2. You must have a hydraulic pump, either electric or air over hydraulic, so the machine can be mounted on a wheeled pedestal. Otherwise you have to bolt the machine to the floor to use the manual cranks and you would need a totally clear 20’ perimeter around it.
3. Make test bends before every project and take very careful measurements of where the bend starts vs where it’s clamped, spring back, twist, etc. Every material is different.
This is my bender. The machines are not too expensive by themselves but once you add 5-6 sets of dies and an electric pump it turns into $4-$5k quick!

Noted and much appreciated
I'm a ways out from making anything marketable. Tooling up a little at a time, I'm down to where I feel like a bender and a notcher would get me where I want to be. I just want some side monies.
And a pulsed mig gun one day

I’m moving into a big shop in Covington in a couple weeks. Come on by and check it out sometime.

I went the opposite way. I already have a pretty nice shop and decided to start doing something productive with it.
You oughta be able to do well. That looks like some fine work.

You ever build any casting platforms? I’m looking to have something built in the future for sight fishing.

Yes, I have few I’m building in the next couple of weeks in various sizes. 2 are for micro skirts and the other will be 24x28 and 24” tall for a bay boat.
I’ll post pictures when I finish them. They will have a hydroturf deck, too.

Right on. I’d rather support someone local if you don’t mind posting a contact.
