You should hire a forester

Complain all you want, but plenty of people on this forum would love to own your tract of land.

I have—he cruised it. Said it should be clear cut since it was mature stand and then said find something else to do with it—trees suck. I agree.
He is an old guy that owns trees too. Tree owners have a significantly different view than non owner industry participants.
There just aren’t enough markets close to me and there are thousands of acres of timber. I know lots of landowners—some most here would call large land owners—and to a man none will ever have a 20 year old tree on their place again and all say if their current trees don’t pay they are finished with timber.
One good friend of mine has 5000 acres of trees in South Georgia and he lost over a million dollars in trees during Michael. He is planting pecans as he sells timber now and is only replanting pine on his worse ground that has no other use. He is clear cutting as trees reach chip and saw—which is very fast in his area. He said in his lifetime he will never profit enough from his trees to replace the $1 million

“LDWF used to pimp sawtooths like they were a magic tree”
Truth,I wonder why. I went all in for them, planted 700.I have several in front of my house, they make loads of acorns but squirrels don’t even eat them.I had a pear tree right by them and deer ate the hell out of the pears but never touched the sawtooth acorns.Alas, the pear tree died,I’ve planted several more but they haven’t started bearing yet.
“People still believe it too”
Also truth.a guy at church was talking them up,he plans to plant a bunch.I told him to not waste his time.He didn’t even try to hide the skepticism on his face.

I'll ask again.
Doesn't LSU or MSST have some fast producing whites, reds and post now?
So the sawtooth are just bitter or something? What's the deal with nothing eating them?

These guys are very helpful on pine and hardwood seedlings. Arborgen
If I buy any trees—pine or hardwood—I am going with them.

I had a forester handle my thinning of my property back in December. I contacted him in September of last year. He had 3 loggers look at it and it was cut between Christmas and New Year's. I was pretty pleased with the prices considering the industry at the moment. If you are trying to do this yourself, it's like building a house and subbing out yourself. Get a forester if you don't have one and let them handle. My guy took 7% of the gross as his payment which is pretty standard.

First, I think that was a bit of an anomaly, because there are far too many people that promote sawtooth for his experience to be a common occurrence.
But in all likelihood, if wildlife aren't eating something, it's because they aren't used to that food source (sawtooth is nonnative), or there are other, more preferred food sources available.
If the wildlife in a given area has other food sources available, they aren't going to bother with something they aren't familiar with or isn't giving them everything they need.
I put out birdseed every year in my feeders around the house, but the birds won't even touch them unless every other natural food source around is unavailable.

I’ve not heard of such a thing. Mossy Oak has some native hybrids that are supposed to be on the precocious side. My experience with a couple varieties has been very positive but they aren’t producing yet.

Anyone else on reason's to not use sawtooth? Other alternatives recommendatiins are appreciated.

Sawtooth drops too early.

Any other native oak. Just pick the right species for the site.

They’re Chinese shite trees.

That I know I was just hoping someone new of some fast maturing white or reds.
Posted on 8/27/22 at 11:41 am to GREENHEAD22
They’ll never make a log. There’s a couple hundred alternatives. Pick any native or native hybrid.

That produce acorns in under 10 years?

My deer have no issues with eating the acorns off my sawtooths. Maybe they are from Asia.
But don’t take my word for it.
