Can't rule out copperhead b/c of picture quality. But those bands look like a cottonmouth to me. More jagged and irregular that a copperhead's, which are usually smoother.
Another vote for cottonmouth here. Jagged bands, and it also looks like it has the dark bar on the side of its head typical of cottonmouths.

As soon as he texted to me I saw the head and responded "cottonmouth?" and he said "Yes! Now he is a dead cottonmouth".

To all the down voters, i would bet a large amount of money that this snake in the OP is a copperhead
You'd lose a large amount of money. It's a Cottonmouth.

Juvenal Cottonmouth, or possibly a different water snake. Definitely not a Copperhead

That ain't no water snake buddy. I killed this one the other day.

I'm going with cottonmouth also. While SOME of the marks resemble that of a copperhead, not all do. Copperheads have pretty damn consistent markings. I would bet this is a relatively young cottonmouth. Once they mature, their bodies become thicker (fat). This one is pretty slim.

Negative ghost rider. Born and raised in the swamps and I could tell it's a copperhead before zooming in.
Look at the tail as well. A moccosin is more stubby/ chubby. The pattern looks just like a copperhead.

Let me be the first to say that that is not a high quality photo.
But it looks like a stinking muddy cottonmouth to me.

Plot twist... it's Copperhead/moccosin mix

Two things apparent in bad photo: spot within band, and dark face band. 100% cotton.

In that case you should either zoom in or reconsider every snake you’ve ever called a copperhead

I'm quite positive you don't know as much about copperheads and cottonmouths as you think, no matter where you were born and raised.
The tail doesn't tell you shite. And, cottonmouths and copperheads, especially when young, have very similar patterns. The pattern on a cottonmouth tends to be more jagged or "pixelated" than a copperhead, although sometimes they're close enough that it can be difficult to tell in photos from that feature alone. A bigger indicator is the presence of a dark band on a cottonmouth's head, that runs through the eye.
Copperhead
Cottonmouths
Both species can vary a lot depending on location, age, and individual snake. But the snake in the OP is a cottonmouth.
