A friend and I want to go fishing in destin in a few weeks. Since we don't have enough people to make a private charter worth it, how do y'all feel about party boat fishing? It sounds like fun even if it will be crowded. Does anyone have a certain boat they recommend? Any experiences with this kind of thing?

I've narrowed it down to either swoop or sweet Jody but I'll take any advice or tips.

Please let me know. Thanks in advance!

I used an inflatable tire float with two drink holders and two handholds. You can get them at any shop down 30A. They will even inflate it for you.

The most likely fish you will catch are 12" small snapper of varying species...

This. I've done it twice in my life and that's pretty much what we caught. Didn't really care for it. Although we caught a fare amount of fish on both trips. Too many people and when the guides get you on a spot where everybody is cranking fish up they don't stay long. Not saying you shouldn't go, but I will only do charters from now on...

Thanks! Well it's just 2 of us so we figured we would just try it out once.

Neauxla- going to destin with the family. Going fishing with the bf, which you will probably meet tomorrow

Just 2.. Might be able to get 4 people. $900 for 4 ppl in a charter is pretty high so we would probably still just do the party boat thing. First timers

I haven't called to see if we could bring beer. Alcohol is allowed?

It's called a party boat why couldn't you bring alcohol did one a few years back and you catch a lot of small fish and a few decent fish. Fun if you just want to catch something. We had a good time.

I'd say that ts worth it only once. They provide everything for a cheap price. There's definitely a lot of trash fish caught however I did hook a 4ish' shark that swallowed a snapper I was pulling up so that was fun. The captain stopped, made everyone pull their lines in and waited while we got him to the boat.

Make sure you get spots at the very back of the boat so that you don't have everyone's lines getting tangled in yours the entire time.

We were also given 15 white snapper b/c the others didn't know what they had and/or didn't want to keep their fish so it wasn't a total wash.

Awesome. Thanks that's what I needed to hear. I think it will be cheap and fun for a one time thing.

If it were me, I'd go with the Sweet Jody b/c of the fact they are participating in the Gulf Headboat Collaborative which if I've read it correctly, it allows you to keep any red snapper and gag grouper you catch on your trip and if you can max out on those, they you have more than invested your money wisely.

Have fun and let us know how it goes.

So out of curiosity I called and talked to Emily at Sweet Jody about the pilot program and they are almost out of their allotment of tags for the year and she said the Captain stated it could be any day now that they do run out. So take that into account as to whether you choose them or not. You will still catch keepers, just don't bank on getting to keep your reds and gags. Sorry, I should've called them first before telling you to book them for sure.

They do however get a new allotment of tags in January so I may have to give the party boat fishing a second chance.

It will be crowded.

You can go to the docks and check in with the booking agent there. There are lots of people just like yourself that are only a single or 2 but want to get on a charter. For this reason, you can request a private charter with others and get on a list for boats trying to fill certain trips like 8 hours, 10 hours, etc....

It may take a a day or 2 to get a trip put together so you have to flexible with your schedule but it will give you an escape from getting on a party boat and dealing with the crowds.
