Im looking at going out of state to an outfitter this year on a deer hunt. With it being this late notice only options are states with otc tags. Im trying to decide on where I should go, have been looking at Missouri and Oklahoma but am open to anything. Would love a place that has a 140"+ requirement, archery or gun doesn't matter. Would be looking at going 5-7days. Any advice on where to start my search, or do yall have any specific recommendations?

Missouri is probably the most economical (just tags and travel wise), and you also get two bonus turkey tags.

isn't OTC

I hunt MO every year, but we lease a farm for the week, so no outfitters, but not public either

can't really help with an outfitter, but I'm sure most of the better ones are already booked, especially for the rut

Any advice on hunting in Oklahoma? Are climbers even possible to use?

I went to Virginia last year and saw more deer and bigger deer than I see in Louisiana. Almost no pressure on them.

I try to do saskatchewan at least every 2-3 years.

I have been 5 times so far. Killed a 145 and a 160. The other 3 years i did not shoot, but saw plenty. You just never know what you are going to see. Really a cool experience hunting 300lb deer in the snow.

I had a bowhunt scheduled last year, and it is moved to this year, pending the canadian covid nazis.

i was hunting in the far western part of the state. its all scrub brush and rolling pasture. a lot of it was planted with winter wheat, and there'd be small trees and scrub brush in the lower areas where water runs off. we hunted exclusivly out of ground blinds.

I would call Mike Stroff at SOE hunts. He has hunts in TX, Illinois, and Iowa. Last week he had two spots open up for a hunt at the Grigsby farm in Illinois. You won’t find a better outfitter. He personally returns every phone call, and he works really hard to put you on big bucks. I have hunted with him in south Texas, and I killed a 185 and a 192. His hunts are free range ,and his ranches and farms are full of really nice bucks. I have been on several guided hunts, and I won’t hunt with anybody else after hunting with these guys. Good luck

This

That was the first place I looked, then realized that bitch is closed. Any idea on when they're going to revisit that decision? I'd book a trip there in a heartbeat.

Thanks I'll look into it. I've looked at TX before but the astronomical trophy fees turned my away, and the places that don't have trophy fees don't have good deer.

I've got enough points for Iowa but just put in for another point this year vs getting a tag. I want to set that trip up at least a year in advance.

I know what you mean about the trophy fees in Texas. Mike still doesn’t do that. You will pay 5500 for any buck up to 170. I think he had a 200” killed in Iowa and Illinois last year. He doesnt overhunt his properties at all. I went on a guided hunt in Illinois with a different outfitter, and he had over 50 hunters in camp. I didn’t even see a racked buck all week.

Go hunt public ground along the Missouri River in Missouri. You have enough days to do a little scouting then hunt. Big deer along the MO River. Bring a boat if you have one.

He’s already filled those 2 spots. I replied to his email and I guess they got filled immediately. I hunted up there last year. Saw plenty of good deer. I got a duck hunt in Saskatchewan in late October that still in limbo and was wanting a back up plan with Mike. Gonna have to find someone else I reckon.
