re: Midwest hunting update

Spunky,
Are you hunting with an outfitter? I have done the IL and OK outfitter deal, and I just hit both on a bad week I guess. I have thought about doing a KY velvet hunt or a KS early muzzleloader hunt to try to up the odds. Do you have any good names up there you recommend. Thanks

I was 32 with all assets included, and 35 with just stocks and cash. Now, at 51 we have 8.1 just in stocks and cash. It is nice to have, but I wish I would have lightened up on the savings at times. I became way too locked in on watching the numbers monthly, and I didn’t enjoy everything as much as I should or could have. Enjoy the ride and congrats
I would think 3M at 45 is doable, but I have 6.5M just in stocks and cash at 51 and still don’t feel comfortable. We live a fairly modest lifestyle, but we do have two in college. I thought the private school days were expensive. Having two in college at the same time is ridiculous. I think some of my fear is due to the 2008 crash and 2020 crash. I also fear losing purpose without something to do each day. I love to hunt, but not many friends would be available during the middle of the week. Anyway, the 3M is probably OK, but you could significantly improve your net worth with just a few more years.

Timber cutting advice

Does anybody have any good recommendations for a forester to use for cutting around 1,000 acres in the south Delta? Do you know of anybody to avoid too? Thanks for any advice.
Will you please tell me how to legally use my write-offs as a tax deduction. I asked my accountant about that my first year in practice twenty years ago, and he said you can’t write it off.

That was it , and possibly a turn row or two to add to the fun.

I don’t doubt that at all. It was almost a sure thing that delta kids at Ole Miss or State would get a DUI in their first semester. We were all just so used to being the designated drunk driver. Thankfully our kids use Uber these days.

Back in the day, we could go from Greenville to Chevy’s and barely hit blacktop. Good times and I am just glad to have made it through.

That is really cool to see in your backyard. Not often that bucks like that hang around in yards. Where in Texas are you? I have always loved hunting South Texas, but they are getting too proud of those trophy bucks for me.
I miss the old one too. It really was the unofficial start to the hunting season. You always would run into old friends and hunting acquaintances to get you in the mood for the upcoming season. It’s amazing how humans can find ways to mess up a good thing. I used to help friends by working in the Mean Mallard booth, and it was mind blowing how big their sales were in those four days. After they broke up the main Ganza, my son and I went to the one at the Refuge, and it just wasn’t close to the same.

I have owned four suburbans, and I can’t think of a practical reason to own a Tahoe or Yukon. They drive basically the same, but the Tahoe has zero cargo room. Even with the third row up in the Suburban, you can fit all of your luggage for a family of five. Also, I hunt a lot, and I prefer the suburban over a truck. I can put all of my stuff in the back and not worry about rain or it getting stolen.

Thank you Oldskule. Do you have to hire an Indian guide on the reservation hunts? I have heard the numbers are down up there. Hopefully we can find an honest outfitter with good numbers. Thanks again for any tips for hunting the reservation

Merriams outfitter recommendations

Posted by Rebel12 on 4/23/23 at 7:17 pm
I am looking to take my Dad on a Merriams hunt in Nebraska or South Dakota. Does anybody have any good outfitters or info about hunting the Indian reservations? Thanks
It’s interesting that you talked about enjoying time around the skinning rack or the camp house at night . It reminded me of all the good times when everybody gathered for supper at the big house or around the skinning shed. Today, at the club, everybody retreats to their own cabin for meals, and everybody is a nervous wreck taking their buck to the rack for measurements. I love seeing and killing trophy bucks as much as anybody, but I really miss listening to the old timers tell their stories and mess with each other. The quality of hunting has increased dramatically through the years, but the club experience has decreased.

I grew up hunting in one of these clubs on the river, and I would probably rank the hunting above south Texas and the Midwest. It is hard to explain what it feels like hunting on those river islands. However, as much as I miss it, I couldn’t go back to dealing with all of the drama in those clubs. The deal that finally ended it for me involved my son’s first buck. He killed a 152” ten point with his crossbow as a seven year old, and I had some older members bitch about him getting to hunt early in bow season with a crossbow. They said it wasn’t fair to the gun hunters. I just shook my head and told them to learn how to shoot a crossbow, or just be happy that a young kid is getting in the woods and having success. Most members of those clubs are pretty successful, and they are used to being the top dog in their business or profession. That mindset leads to having a lot of chiefs and very few Indians. If I could hunt the island without the drama, I would buy a membership tomorrow.

Opinions on the Millennium Buck Hut

My family wants to add several box stands for next year. A few us mainly bow hunt, but most of our guests rifle hunt. Has anybody used these for either bow or rifle? They look like they would be a good option versus the loud plastic box stands. My main concern is how well they will hold up. Thanks for any input.

re: Kentucky buck High Fence?

A few years ago, a farmer from the MS Delta tried to pass off an Illinois preserve buck as the new Mississippi state record. He concocted an elaborate story how he killed it at Catfish point. The whole story didn’t add up to other club members, and the game and fish guys proved it wasn’t a MS deer through DNA testing. He narrowly avoided jail time. This was a mid fifties wealthy farmer trying to get credit for a deer record. It is sad what people will do for attention.

My Dad is still waiting to hear about his duck hunt in Saskatchewan too. Hopefully they will open up before the season gets here. I have thought about hunting with Mike in Illinois, but it has been hard to resist his TX hunts. It’s unreal how many big bucks you can see on each hunt.

I know what you mean about the trophy fees in Texas. Mike still doesn’t do that. You will pay 5500 for any buck up to 170. I think he had a 200” killed in Iowa and Illinois last year. He doesnt overhunt his properties at all. I went on a guided hunt in Illinois with a different outfitter, and he had over 50 hunters in camp. I didn’t even see a racked buck all week.
