Does anyone know what the fine/punishment is for operating a boat without the boater safety course and license? This is for people born after the date and are required to have a license.

A lot more than taking the free online test and getting a license mailed to you.

Yay for being old!

Seriously it's a pretty easy online course, and I imagine there's something you can print out. I was born before the cutoff date and still took it. Lots of good info.

Do the online course.

I was born after the cut-off date but still completed the Illinois course online and the Maryland and Virginia courses by showing up in person and taking a written test.

It was so long ago that I cannot remember what I had to do for Virginia, but it was before the days of the internet.

Maryland was the most serious about it. Theirs was an all-day Saturday and Sunday deal with a test at the end that you had to pass. But in the end it was all worth it because not only did I get the license but also a really cool Maryland Safe Boater Patch with an anchor on it.

Just get someone with the license or that is exempt from it to fish with you. Good to go.

But it's $50 as previously stated.

I worked on the water half my life and in my time saw some horrible things. Trust me every one should take at least a basic test.

When did they start doing this? I never got mine in 2006.
