Before I ask.....I'll preface with this, I dont typically carry a gun on my person. I own guns but do not usually carry.

So a friend just posted a video on facebook a conversation between a cop and a citizen.

Basically the gentleman was walking down the street open carrying his pistol. The police received a few calls of concern, so the cop rolls up. He asked the gentlemen how he was doing and what not and if he minded if he held onto the pistol while they had a conversation. The guy obliged but after this point he stopped cooperating.

The office asked just to see an ID to which the kid refused and asked the officer if he had any suspicion that he was going to commit a crime.

Basically the kid did not cooperate, the officer ended up giving him is piece back and let him go on his way.

Im not sure how I feel about his, I mean if I see a guy walking around witha gun, Im not going to call the cops but im gonna keep my eye on him.

I really dont feel like the cop wqas harrassing him too much, just checking out the situation.

Brethren of the OB, educate me on the right and wrong of this.

I don't like open carry for a few reasons, with getting the cops called on me being a big one.

People doing it just for show like the guy in the video almost certainly was really piss me off.

You're right, its the ones that lawfully open carry that you really need to worry about.

As you were.

If I'm in the country, around people that are comfortable around guns I'll open carry. If I'm in town I usually conceal. I don't like all the old lady's pointing and whispering, asking security guards about me while I'm shopping with my children. My kids pick up on that and get uneasy I think. My kids know guns aren't bad, but I don't want them to get the impression their father is walking around with an agenda because I have to explain often how what I'm doing is 100% legal. My oldest daughter (5) knows there is a gun in my pants or close by at all times, and that it's nobody else's business.

Also, even though carrying is legal I don't like to attract attention just in case I'm doing something else that isn't so legal.

So do I.

With the way I see some people who claim to be safe handle guns, I pay very close attention to anybody I see with a gun, and even more so when it's loaded.

did he commit a crime? Nope. So no need to show ID

Can't just walk around asking for folks IDs just because

he did NOT have to show ID. Cop got a report of a guy with a gun im sure. Rolled up to check it out. Saw the guy was legal. Asked for ID to run for warrants.

its standard police procedure, but the guy carrying was within his rights. Probably just being a smartass stretching his limits of the law.

If more people would open carry i believe the people that did not would not get so up tight as well as the cops. A friend of mine is a cop and he has no problem with someone that open carry's unless that person is acting very strange. If he gets a call about someone carrying and acting strange, he will approach them and check them out, which i don't have a problem with.

Why would one give an ID for this if all was leagal?

Would you just hand over your ID if a cop walked up to you asking just because?

If the cop stopped me for complaints on open carry.........and was cordial about it.

I would show my ID......I have nothing to hide and am perfectly legal.

Theres a fine line between following up on a complaint and being cordial about it or being a prick and abusing your authority. If I'm approached by an officer and he is respectful I have no problems letting him hold on to my weapon while he checks the situation. Just imagine the kick back if an officer ignores the complaint and that person goes in a store and kills someone. Most of the officers support the 2nd amendment and would rather not have to approach you, however they are in a sticky situation if there is a complaint from the public.

Certainly, I mean if he put me in a chokehold like the other thread..............Id have a real problem cooperating.

My personal opinion on this instance is that the kid was being an arse hat.

I would want to see an id just to make sure he is not a felon or warrants
