There’s a lake here in the Ms delta on the Leflore county/Humphreys county line called Democrat Lake. It got its name due to all the “Democrats” farmers and catfish farmers in the area killed and dumped in it. It’s in middle of nowhere. Creepy place, all trees are dead in the lake and hardly nothing grows around it. Lots of sand. Heard there’s no fish in it either. Just an eerie, dead place nobody ever goes to.
And mine has a map

USGS is the agency that changed the "colloquial" names on maps back in the day.
I spent a couple of years working for a state wildlife department, and one old guy from Kentucky used to cuss them all day long because they came down here and took the liberty of changing names on the maps. He made it a point to use the historically correct names every time we were in the field.
Out of respect for his ornery disrespect of the feds, I do the same every chance l get.

I clearly recall way back in about 74 or 75 using a topo map in DeSoto Parish. The small stream I was cruising timber in was clearly labeled Dead N****r Branch.
A year or two later at a government office, in a newer map it was labeled
Dead Negro Branch.
None of the old guys knew the story.
Also recall examining landowner records in Mansfield courthouse and finding Bills of Sale for slaves.
One in particular was of a sale of 4 or 5 human beings, listing approximate age, sex and price.
I remember one old guy about 80 or so was thrown in with some youngsters for about $5.
Evil times there.

Same map I have that I got from my Dad.
I was wondering how to post a picture and not get band. There was no way I was going to block out the name.
Besides that, my map has a lot of hot fishing spots marked on it. Problem there, much has changed over the years.

The Map is dated 1962. It includes the name “Black Bay” also. I guess people called it what they wanted, even back then. I always called it Black Bay.

For one close in name use Google maps and zoom in to the area near Chicot in Evangeline. Lol at the lake just West of Indian lake.

I know one that shot an employee under the chin for falling asleep on the job in 2003. And got away with it.
I know a black guy who managed a farm for the same guy as above said he personally buried 4-5 bodies in the bottom of fish ponds with a backhoe. People don’t know the shite that still goes on around here that wealthy farmers get away with

HeyTrout, still waiting! Is it that hard for a man to admit they were wrong! LOL. Just picking with you! But this could lead to other discussions about names of places. Speaking of Delacroix, does everyone know why the Graveyard is called the “Graveyard “?
