Old revolver question

My mom came across my grandfathers 38 S&W revolver the other day. He bought in not long before he was killed in 1971. Fire few times before his death and I am sure none since then. Looks in great shape and appears to function well. Your opinion, safe to shoot right off the bat or would you have someone check it out before firing it??

I'd shoot it. I really don't see what could be wrong with it just from sitting up. Revolvers are simple, tough, and reliable.

Put bullets in it, go pew pew pew pew pew pew, drink a beer for grandfather.

Is it a 38 S&W or a S&W 38 special?
