I was gonna do the same thing but after looking for 2 years, I just went to Brookhaven and bought a brand new one for not much more than than all these folks want for a 20 year old bike.

I definitely understand what you're saying. Another 1500 or so and you can pick up a brand new Rancher 4x4.

The last good bike Honda made.
I have a 98.
The brake issue is an easy fix. Find one with working brakes. Drill and tap drums for a grease fitting. Fill drums entirely with grease.
Brakes will still work. But will never break again.
Expect to pay 2-2500 for a nice 4x4.
As for new 420s, their emission components all go out. 2014 and after. Give them time, but they all fail. Honda of today is nothing like Honda pre Mr. Honda's retirement.

I didn't know that about the new Honda's. What's the deal with the gear reductions I see a lot of them have? Is that just so you can push bigger tires better, but not really necessary if you aren't hardcore mudding with it? Thanks for all the great info!

Glad to find this thread. I'm currently fixing up a 2000 Fourtrax 300. Got it going pretty well last year, only problem right now is the starter is stuck, probably needs replacement or rebuild.

Essentially, yes. If you're staying under 27" tire, no need. But any bigger or if you're cracking the cases for any reason, put it in.

Well, I found one. A 2000 model for $2500. I'm going look at it this week. Other than a set of older mud lites, the bike is bone stock. Adult owned and just used for hunting. Plastics and tank are pristine along with the racks. Has the metal running boards. So if the bike doesn't smoke or make strange noises, I'm gonna pull the trigger. I'll post pics if I end up with it. I'm kind of pumped. I want one for myself now. Lol

Had a 300 many years ago. Was an absolute workhouse for me. Very very few problems. Great choice if you can find one in pretty good condition. Lots of older guys have them but don't sell them. Keep looking.

I have a friend with a very early model 2wd model (‘86, I believe). It’s been drowned a couple of times. And it still starts and runs every hunting season.

I have one...a 95 I think. Best bikes we've ever had.
I'd say it's in pretty great condition...never dreamed you could get that kind of money for a 20 year old atv

I have a honda 1986 350 4x4. The thing is a tank. Right now it is out of service because a switch went out on the reverse gear, but I can't complain. The wheeler is over 30 years old after all.

Honda wouldn't make a 4x4 ATV with more power until...hell maybe the 500 foreman. They were way ahead of their time.
