Old Honda 300 Fourtrax

My son, 14, wants one of these old bikes. I don't know anything about them or anyone with one. I assume they're built solid because there's still a lot of them from the 90's still around. I'm trying to help him find one. Any years that had flaws that I should stay away from? We're looking for a clean, unmolested (no snorkel, etc) bike. He really likes the tan one's. I'm hoping to find a nice clean one for around $2500 to 3k. Most that I see on facebook groups are pretty ragged out. I tried to tell him he should just buy a Rancher 420, but he's set on the 300.

I have an '89 sitting my shop that runs like a sewing machine......he's on the right track.

Good luck, those that I know that have them aren't letting them go, not for any reasonable about of money at least.

I have one. They’re incredible.
I’d probably part with mine for $3k but it probably fits your description of “ragged out”

I have a 98 model and love it. Doesn't have the latest technology but runs like it's brand new.

If I do run across a clean, (old man owned), bike, what should I expect to pay? Is 3k unreasonable? So pretty much mechanically they are the same all years they made them and there's no particular year to steer clear of?

I am not selling but I have a 93 Honda Fourtrax that still runs pretty well

My dad has either a 93 or a 95(can't remember off the top of my head) green 300 fourtrax 2wd. It has 25" kenda bearclaws on the back and the stock 24" tires off my foreman on the front. We put a 2" lift just to get him a little more ground clearance and just recently changed the headlights to a better style bulb. It's in good shape. He's been talking about getting a larger 4x4 but unsure what his timeline is. I can talk to him if you'd like. Send me your contact info.

If he can find a decent 300, as others have said it's a great machine.
Simple, reliable, and they have some pretty good power for their size.
The kick starter is another good feature, I know the pull starter on my Rancher along with many others is toast.
Don't count on the brakes working, unless it's never seen any kind of off road use. I love my hondas, but the old brakes are terrible.

I love how every Honda 300 "for sale" ad lists the status of the brakes. Either it says "brakes work like new" or "doesn't have front/rear brakes". Any other 4 wheeler ad doesn't list if the brakes work because it's typically understood that the rest have working brakes.

No thanks Stein. He wants a 4x4.

Why the down vote? I simply let him know my son wanted a 4x4 instead of his 2x4 he may be interested in selling.
Anyway, I see that some of these bikes have front disk brake conversions. I assume that's because the factory brakes are the weak point. Any of you have these disk brake conversions? Are they legit?

I have one. 93 300 4wd. Bullet proof. We will never sell it bc it was my wife’s (no pics) late grandfathers.

The brakes as a whole suck, but the back brake is the Rube Goldberg of all brakes. It’s an incredibly shitty design and when you do decide to replace it Lord have mercy on your soul. Slide hammers, cutting torches, arc gouger, the works. It’s a sealed system by design and works great till it gets some shite in it (about year 3) and once that shite is in there it all starts sieZing up. It’s a bitch and a half.

One of the very best ever, I also like the old Suzuki King Quads and Quadrunners.Arctic Cat also made a great machine that used The Suzuki King Quad engine, but with better suspension.

1998. 29.5 outlaws. 54% GR
I recommend deleting rear brake and putting the disc up front.
When you check them out pay close attention to the rear end. Very prone to leaking. Other than that, if it runs without smoking, you're pretty set. Nothing terribly complicated with them.

No problem. Good luck with the search. They really are some bulletproof machines.

Disk brakes are the way to go. You will have to change the front wheels to 12".
