Obviously, it's cheaper to do it myself, but I'd like to know your POV.

Where did you get yours? How much? Who did you hire to set it up?

My mom bought one for my daughter. Got 5 or 6 folks together. Took less than a day to put it together.

What kind of swing set? Like for the kids or for momma?

If it's for the kids, I'd just get one of those cheap kits from Home Depot or Lowes that require 3 8' 4X4s and 2 2x4's. You'll have about $150 invested in it and it'll last 5 years until they grow up and don't care about it anymore. You won't feel bad about throwing it away.

The kits are dogshit cheap wood and come in a million pieces. If I did it again, I would build myself.

If all you mean is the actual poles that hold up swings and not like a play house type thing also, you can buy just the brackets to attach the 4x4s or whatever lumber to. Then you simply buy the wood, put them in the brackets, and hang the swings.

The biggest thing with the kits is they are so damn short. It really needs to be at least 10 ft tall if not higher. The crappy kits are 6-8 ft and you simply don't swing very high. That's why kids lose interest so fast.

Built my own. Lot sturdier and will last a lot longer. I built a 6x6 play platform and have a swingset bar coming off of it on one side. Used 4x4's for the legs and a 4x6 for the swing bar. If you have time and the know how i'd say go that route but if not, just peruse google. I think most swingset/playhouse combos are made of the same materials. Used a swingset bracket and made life much easier.

Yeah, I didn't mean to buy the kit that includes the wood. By the ones with the brackets like Clyde posted and bring your own wood.

Your kids will play on it for a few weeks then start to get bored with it.

You will likely start hating it (mowing and upkeep around it) in about 15 mins of trying to mow around it the 1st time.

This. We were given a kit by grandparents for Christmas so I had to go buy 4x4's and put it together. I can't wait until they outgrow it so I can get rid of it

I can't get my 3 year old to go out in the yard. I feel like I need something to get her arse out of the house.

This is correct. You will hate it much longer than the kids will love it. You might try Craigslist list or maybe Facebook to see if you can find one on the cheap. I bought a $2,500 Rainbow for $200 from a neighbor. Took it down in 3 large pieces and loaded on trailer. When I'm done with it, I'll give it away or cut it up and place on curb.

This.

When our girls got too big to use it, I took most of it apart in large sections and gave it to some friends with little kids. Had a few pieces of redwood left over; wound up using them when I replaced flooring in my boat.

Wait til you can pick up a used one. Bought one from a friend with older kids. He and his dad sketched it out and built it. Three swings, a 6 x 6 tower with a slide and a 3 x 3 raised platform. Paid $100 for it.

Used it for almost 10 years, and my wife just sold it on Facebook for $250.

This/\ One of my adult nephews has 3 kids now and bought this huge monstrosity of a set for his kids. It's like a fort, monkey bars, slide, swing combo and it took him and 3 other people 3 days to put it together. That was 2 years ago and the kids hardly play on it anymore.

His biggest complaint while putting it together were the amount of pieces and tons of hardware to bolt it together. Then again, he's not much of a DIY type guy and was probably overwhelmed by it all.

I built one of these about 10 years ago with local treated lumber. Still looks great.
