We may not need an official thread here, but I made it official, just in case.

I need someone to give me some pointers here. I'm sure there are people on here that are metal detecting experts.

First, I'm looking for some good spots to detect. I live in bossier parish, it's next to caddo parish, which is the parish that Shreveport is in. I live in Benton though.
Could someone help me and make some suggestions on where to go, in that area, specifically.

If someone wants to be more broad and suggest general places to detect then that's fine.for example, a church may be good, even though you don't know of a specific church in my area.
I've tried cypress lake beach,nothing.

My other issue is larger. My detector was fairly cheap, which may be my problem.
The problem is, the freak8ng thing makes the same noise no matter what I hit.. This makes it to where Im digging up nothing but alluminum cans. It's the same sound when I find a coin.

I also like magnet fishing,if there's anybody that can help me there too, that would be nice . I need a good spot for that too.

I'm willing to drive 50 miles in any direction from bossier city. If anyone has a spot within that radius, I'd love to here about it. A magnet fishing spot is another thing I'm after.

so to reiterate ,a metal detecting spot, magnet fishing spot, or just general tips and general areas are appreciated .

I'm glad you started this thread, I have been meaning to ask about this subject myself.
We have some old gold mines around where I live, I would like to get a good metal detector to mess around with around some of those old mines, and some of the creeks.
I wouldn't mind getting a small vacuum dredge to try too. I think it would be a good hobby.
Me and my brother had a small sluice years ago, that we would set up in The little creek at my Grandmother's place. we found a few flakes and a very small nugget one day.
I think a good metal detector to use, would help find more.
Would like to know more about what the better models are, from people with personal experience.

I can tell you that, if you want to be able to detect the gold, you need to make sure that the detector is a nice one that recognizes the difference between Ferris and none Ferris metals.

Mine doesn't have that option, I think that's why I can't figure out how to tell the difference between what's a beer can and what isn't a beer can.

I literally had to quit going out and using mine, because I just dig up cans constantly.
I flagged 30 different hits that I got, in a general area, with my detector.
When I went back to dig them up, I had 29 cans and 1 that wasn't a can, it was some bondo looking lead that hardened.

I gave up on it and I'm assuming I'll have to buy a nice one or I'll just dig up cans constantly

Anybody know what I could do to tell the difference in cans, and not cans? Lol

I think I'm just gonna have to buy a new one,aint I?

I'll need to buy Something nicer with more technology. I guess a Ferris and non Ferris metals sound, will help my situation and the auburn fans situation above, too,am I rite?

I have checked them out online, and there are some that claim to be better, and cost more. I would like to get recs from some people that know about it though, and I don't know anybody around here that ever does that.

Yep, I watch it, I kind of think that place was an old shipyard or maybe a whaling station at one time.

Here is an idea I got, when I was microwaving some popcorn.

Every metal detector that I have seen, has sensitivity controls. Maybe you could bury some different items in your yard at different depths, and mark them so that you know what each item is, then practice with your detector, and play with the sensitivity? and maybe learn how to use it better?

I don't live at Opelika anymore.

I live in Clay County. Yeah there are some old gold mines around here.

They were in operation in the early 1800s until about 1850. When the California gold rush hit, they closed down, because everybody headed to California.

I bought my kid a cheap Harbor Freight one. He has found a couple of cool things. Regarding the cans, I think maybe it has more to do with where you are detecting. Took him to the park a few days ago. I was thinking of all the folks hanging out along the bayou surely dropped lots of change over the years. NOPE they dropped TONS of the old beer pull tabs. LOL

On a bachelor party years ago one of our friends lost his wedding ring on the beach (they had been married less than a couple months). After drunkenly looking in the sand with no luck we went to an Academy an hour away and bought a metal detector. Within 15 min of turning it on we found the ring. Went back to Academy and returned the metal detector.

I paid about $600 for a metal detector about ten years ago. I bet I haven't used it ten times. It's something that should be fun and good exercise I just never did take to it.

What brand is it? Does it seem like it works well?
What kind of situations did you use it in?
Have you ever tried to see how well it distinguished between different metals?

I have always been interested in metal detecting but as others have said, never got around to doing it.

Check out treasurenet.com a really cool metal detecting forum. I was on there this mornig reading about a guy from Abita Springs detecting in New Orleans and found an 1809 8 reales coin.

I grew up in NE MS.
I have a friend that does this a lot but he has a couple of old Civil War military encampment the he hunts (Corinth and Shiloh) He's found all kinds of stuff. He's found a few old bayonettes.

I was born in Murfreesboro and we lived next to the battle of Stones River Park. Dad had a garden and every year when tilling he would find bullets. I think he found a couple of buckles as well.

I have a Garret AtPro metal detector and a cheap bounty hunter. I have hunted around BR and Port Hudson area some.

The metal cans are usually pretty easy to distinguish. If you practice on different items around your house, you can actually tell the difference by the loudness and clarity of the tone after awhile.

I posted on here to anyone that had old family land or sites near Civil War Battlefields. people seemed like they were interested, but didn`t have any places for me to go.

It can be challenging to find places. There are lots of guys out there metal detecting and unless you have places to go on private property, you`re limited on how much use to will get out of it.

I wouldn`t suggest getting an expensive one until you have some possible good sites to play around on. Mine was close to $500 about 7 years ago.
