I don't live at Opelika anymore. I live in Clay County. Yeah there are some old gold mines around here. They were in operation in the early 1800s until about 1850. When the California gold rush hit, they closed down, because everybody headed to California.
I knew kid when I was kid who earned a pretty good living for a 17 year old mucking about in creeks between Cartersville, Dallas and Douglasville Georgia panning for gold. He wasn't getting rich but he managed to keep gas in his truck and pot in his bong so he was happier than a pig in slop....there is a town just a little west of there called Rich Village because of the gold in the area...DeSoto or Ponce DeLeon is credited with discovering it but the Creeks in the area probably knew about it either were nothing more than a gleam in their daddies eyes...

I've always thought that some of the really old general store buildings, would be great places to look for old coins maybe.

Yeah, it's not far from here, over to Dallas, as the crow flies.
Now that I am kind of halfway retired, I think it would be a great way to spend some time. I've always been interested in it, and never really had the time to do it.

Its out there....and a great excuse to muck around in a creek like a kid! I'd carry a light spinning reel and some rooster tails....some of those creeks have some damned fine fishing in them.
There used to be enough panning for gold around Marietta, Georgia in the 70's that there was a place that sold all kinds of gold hunting stuff just a little north of 285 on Hwy 41...there are also gemstones in the area.
The first gold rush in the United States was in Dahlonega Georgia...it was supposedly a huge strike...and it is still there. It just got to where it was requiring more digging than it did in other places so they moved on but that gold is still in the area...plenty to keep a person interested in they are so bent....

Some of the new tools and innovations that we have now, could make it a different ballgame, especially in the creeks.

Looks like post civil war to me. The picture doesn’t show everything, but the head looks more rounded in this picture.
What state was it found ?

Louisiana. Several hundred feet from a known battle ground.

We had an easter egg hunt at Kennesaw Mountain National Park one year when I was a kid and we used the holes dug by people with metal detectors to hide eggs in....it looked like a major prairie dog metropolis with all the holes in the ground. I think they prohibited the use of metal detectors shortly after this.....some of those eggs are probably still there given the industrial chemicals they were coated with back in the early 70's....

Yeah that tends to be a common problem. People very seldom replace the holes they dig. This particular bullet was found on family property, but we've had people trespass and leave their shovel marks all other the place. Make for a hell of a ride when cutting the grass.

I purchased a few magnets on line with rope and accessories and have a river kayaking trip planned in a few weeks. I’m going to test it out in the river around some of the bridges while my buddies fish. I’m not much of a fisherman but love the outdoors. When they go on fishing trips, I go with them and hike. Now I’ll be right there along side of them. I’ll post my results.

Go talk to the old timers in your area and ask them where the outhouses were located at the schools and churches. People dropped their pants and coins would sometimes fall out.
