On a scale of 1 to 254 with 1 being not a problem at all and 254 being you're a fricking idiot for even proposing this how bad of an idea is it to use regular non-offset scope rings on an AR with one of your rings being mounted to the top rail of your free float hand guard. Rail is not yet purchased so lets say on a rail in the $150 price range if that makes a difference.
i honestly dont think it's that big of a deal, as long as you have a robust barrel nut and several crossbolts

I wouldn't do it. Not for fear the rail would rotate during use, but because the picatinny rail on your hand guard is likely not the same as the rail on your upper. The tolerances for picatinny are not very tight, and vary between manufacturers. I see a lot of rails that sit a few thou below the upper's rail as well as a lot of varying widths between them. Plus you have to worry about it not being perfectly square to the face of the receiver. Also, if the rail is the clamp on style the strain or deformation could make it a PITA or impossible to square up. Any of the above could cause your scope to point off or introduce stress to the scope. It's possible it could work, but personally I'd just opt for the cantilever mount instead of the rings.

I'm looking at building a 18-20" upper because... well... because I don't have one. If I go with 18" do I want rifle length gas or mid length? Or does it matter? Looking for something cheapish like a Ballistic Advantage or Faxon barrel. Was originally wanting a rifle length gas system on a 20" but there is a good deal on a midlength 18" BA barrel with pinned lopro right now. Don't think I really need that extra 2" of barrel.

You can do either, but I do see a lot of people trying to trouble shoot builds with 18" rifle gas. Take it for what it's worth.

Are these people trying to combine a carbine buffer, a rifle gas and a tweener barrel length? Seems sketchy to begin with.
I may do a 18" build, but I'm known to just futz around with the unimportant part and throw whatever a big company puts together on the top. Seems more efficient use of time. If we were really smart, we'd just send all the parts to you, Prop.

WTF?
Why?
It may have had something to do with his reaction to the hiring of Ed Orgeron. At least that's what put me on bad terms with the powers that be...

Shopping around for 18 and 20" barrels and I see I can get a whole PSA 20" upper for $199. Hell that's cheaper than just plain barrels I'm looking at. I could just throw on a carry handle and call it a day.
Stag Arms had a 20" carry handle upper for just $350 w/ bcg and ch. I wonder if that's worth a damn.

I just built an 18" upper with the Ballistic Advantage fluted SPR barrel. Has rifle length gas system and runs great so far.

This isn't necessarily directed at you 03GeeTee. I didn't mean to come off as insinuating that rifle gas on an 18" barrel does not work. There are a lot of 18" rifle gas setups that run perfectly. I was just pointing out an observation I've made. There are a lot of factors that could contribute to any AR not running right and a barrel from one manufacturer is not the same as one from another.

Prop - are Tubb springs another expensive gimmick?

Ordered a Pair of these today:

Colt? Make sure you order the correct pin size

Roger that. Here's a pic of t'other side:
Notice that it's pre-drilled for the standard front pivot (take-down) pin.

I don't believe it's the take down pinnyunhave to worry about but I could be wrong. It's normally the trigger pins to worry about but they are almost unanimously the same size as everyone else now

True, dat. These are current production.
Have had many large pin pre-ban Colts. Sold them all up north for a tidy profit; along with a Pre-ban PWA, & SA M1A.
Still have one Pre-ban Bushmaster left; but, it has a Colt 1/7 20" A2 Barrel.

This may be a dumb question, but I've browsed through and couldn't find an answer. I don't have or haven't owned an AR15, but interested in getting one.
Can I convert an AR pistol to a rifle (legally)? If so, all I would need is an upper assembly correct?

Yes.
Just don't add a butt stock to your pistol config as that would make it an illegal SBR.
Adding a 16" Rifle length upper to pistol to it is fine, Any overall length over 26" is considered a "firearm" and you can legally add a vertical grip without turning it into a AOW. With a barrel over 16" you can add a butt stock and it is now a rifle.
OAL under 26" and you add a vertical foregrip you make a AOW and that's illegal without a tax stamp. Add a butt stock with barrel under 16" and you have a SBR. Again illegal without the tax stamp.
A rifle can not legally be converted into a pistol. Pistol to Rifle or Firearm is OK.

This is the correct focus. You have to know if you have large trigger pins or small trigger pins.
Assume you have small pins unless you have an older Colt.
(And you only need to know that if you're installing or changing triggers.)
