I'm tempted to build a 9mm AR with this deal. Anyone run an AR in 9?
I don't. Ultimately, I don't see the ultimate utility in a semiautomatic, 9mm carbine - beyond the very, very narrow exception of that gun that takes Glock mags for a patrolman whose agency doesn't issue a long gun. That - at least gives him something in an absolute crisis that he already has the mags and ammo for, and it's light and portable enough to actually have with you when the SHTF.
Having said that, all the cats I know who run ARs in 9mm - the consensus is:
1. Building a dedicated lower (like you would for .22LR) is nice, but not absolutely necessary
2. More fun than they thought.
3. Less trouble than they thought (cycling, ammo issues, etc.)

Report back with how that setup functions. I heard that the BA barrels had some issues with the glock 9mm ARs. But that was awhile back and it was only one guy.

I've looked at them, and from what I've read is that they seem to work pretty good. Most of them don't have a bolt catch though. Aimsurplus.com used to have a bunch of good stuff to build a 9mm ar, but are now out of stock. New Frontier armory is putting out some pretty good stuff. I would check them out.

Only spare lower I have is a 6061 billet lower. I've read 9mm ARs are tough on hammer pins and I would worry about it wearing out the hammer pin hole. Not sure of that info is still relevant with ramped 9mm BCG. I could get a 80% Glock lower for $99-$139 shipping. Or just try a mag block in a standard lower with Colt pattern mags. I don't own a small frame Glock or any Colt mags so I don't guess it matters one way or the other from that perspective. I have two 9mm carbines with a Marlin Camp 9 and HiPoint. Both are fun to shoot. I consider them plinkers. Sometimes you just want something with a little more oomph then 22 to plink with and 9mm is a cheaper alternative for me than 223. My HiPoint is kept in the bedroom closet for my wife to use just in case. 9mm carbine is a lot easier for the novice shooter to hit stuff with if required.

I appreciate the offer Prop, northern VA is not too close to BR though
If I can get the front sight off of this barrel without too much trouble I may check with the LGS to see if they have some and just switch it out

So on rails, what is the difference between a $150 rail and something that's $4-500? Am I paying for better machining and is it that much better?
Also, I'd like to add a bipod mount, but don't want a huge rail. Is there much added benefit to putting one on a 9" as opposed to a 12"?

I'm going to be getting a Blue Force Vickers sling for my new build.
That sling sucks. This is what I've been running...

I'm running old school magpul ms1, asap, and whatever the other thing is. Never run it as a single point sling.
If it had to do it over, id get a tab gear ras sling or Armageddon gear sling, maybe a ftw sling as well.

I really like this sling. Run it on multiple setups. Viking Tactics

Proctor sling
I really like the proctor sling. Simple and inexpensive.
I'm building a 9mm AR pistol with a QC 10 glock lower, cross machine tool upper, BA barrel, shockwave brace.
Any recommendations for an 8" hand guard?

Thought I'd share these AR build items on sale at cdnnsports...
cdnnsports
I have no idea if any of it is quality stuff or well priced.

That Haley sling is almost $100. For half the price you can get a Magpul MS3 sling. Another one to look at is a Ferro Concepts.

I'm piecing together parts for my second build and am in the market for a stripped upper for my SBR project.
I am interested in hearing opinions on whether it is worth the extra money for the more expensive name brands vs. an Anderson. From some searching online, it sounds like most of these different brands are manufactured by the same people.
Do you believe that you are paying for a logo and name only or do you have experience that the more expensive name brands are in fact better than an Anderson and worth the extra money?
I am pretty certain that I will be getting this one cerakoted, so I'm not worried about finish as much as I am worried about the fit. It is being paired with a Spikes lower

As someone who doesn't own an Anderson - they're fine, basic, inexpensive mil-spec lowers. You might get the occasional sloppy fit and there's a chance (due to their volume) that you'll get an error on the machining of a hole - that chance exists with most manufacturers, and is probably only a little higher with Anderson (and most reports are sloppy fit with the upper, and otherwise A OK).
The stripped lower, along with a few pins here and there, is one of the least important things in a build and one of the least where throwing money at the problem makes it better.
Just MHO.

Thanks, that's about where I am at with it. I'd rather spend $50 on a stripped Anderson and use the money I saved somewhere else...barrel, trigger, etc.

Brand new to thread and wanting to jump on the AR train. After shooting my brother's, its time for me to get one.
I want to do an old-school A1 model (as in M-16A1), but honestly I do not know how to start or where to begin. Any ideas would be great appreciated!

To each his own, but this is about as far down my list as you can imagine. Carrying handle rear sight and A1 handguards seem both absolete and hokey to me. And I am the proud owner of an Eagle Arms EA-15 which is essentially a semi-only M16A2.
Everybody is about the carbines now, man. Get with the program.
(ETA: In all seriousness, you can get 20" rifles with fixed stocks - but you're probably going to have to shop around.)
