I assembled the lower without a vice. I have right at $900 in the gun itself. A couple hundred more for a cheap red dot and 10 ea. 30 round magazines.
ETA:
I have $250 in the lower, and I could have spent about $300 on a complete upper on PSA and had a finished gun for $500. I chose to build the upper myself because I wanted a free float rail ($200) and a little better quality barrel.

How did you torque the castle nut down and stake it?

Just bought my first AR. I've been reading this thread for 2 weeks along with other research. Picked up the Colt LE6920 Carbine. Best spec barrel that my gun shop had in my price range.
Only change I will make for a while is a slight upgrade on the handguard to a Magpul composite. The Colt handguard is just too bulky.

Any suggestions on where I should buy parts?
PSA
CTD
RifleGear - there is a rifle gear store like 2 miles from my house.

Typical entry level AR. Nothing wrong with that at all. Buy it, throw some furniture on her and have fun.

No, but Mrs. Midnight's lower will be our test case.

Finished my first AR last night, just waiting on FedEx to deliver my BCG and Red Dot...

If you're planning on shooting primarily suppressed (or hell, even not suppressed), I highly recommended a JP silent capture spring. I can't live without em at this point, have one in all my builds.
