Just moved to the Bay Area and I have see a lot of ducks and a few turkeys since I've moved to the Bay Area. Do any of you happen to live in the area, and have any leads on places to hunt duck or turkeys? I don't know a soul out here, and there aren't many people that share similar interests.

Just stating the obvious. From what I've read, there seems to be some good hunting out here. Not sure how to get started finding a place. Someone else has to have gone through the same thing on here..

There are a shitload of turkeys along the San Pablo Ridge and the towns to the east. Moraga, Orinda, Lafayette, Walnut Creek, Martinez, etc. They're to the point of being a nuisance in some areas. About 30 decided to roost in the trees of the playground at my nephews' pre-school and proceeded to crap all over everything. It was kind of a production to run them off and get the place cleaned up.

But as far as I know, there's no place to legally hunt them that I'm aware of. But there ought to be.

I did once see a couple of guys with rifles near Mt Diablo SP who claimed to be hunting hogs. I'm almost positive they were on park property. I didn't spend a lot of time BSing with them. I don't know if hunting is allowed or if they had a special permit to kill the hogs. Or maybe they didn't give a shite.

There are tons of ducks along the Sacramento River and plenty of farmland. I'm sure people hunt them.

Not all 40 million residents of CA are vegans who spend all day trying to visualize whirled peas. People shoot guns for fun and people hunt. It's just not as prevalent as it is in LA.

I worked in Redding for a few months 2009 -2010. I absolutely loved it! It's not like the Bay Area or most of SoCal.

Mount Shasta is incredible!

Weavertown to the west of Redding is also beautiful and the Sasquatch capital, but also has many areas of Mexican Cartel Pot fields so be careful!

Lots of Black Tail in that area and there are Roosevelt Elk on the NW coastal area if I am not mistaken. I am not sure of the hunting regulations for them.

I have also traveled over 80% of the continental US and I have never seen as many waterfowl as I saw in the fall/winter of 2009/2010 north of Sacramento! It was incredible the amount of birds I saw traveling I-5 north of Sacramento!

Growing up in SW Louisiana, I was amazed at what I saw. The closest I have seen to that was NE Arkansas and SE Missouri as far as waterfowl go.

We have it good here in Louisiana and I love it, but man, there are lots of opportunities available out there if you are in the right place.

Good Luck. I kind of hope Cali will break up into separate states. I could live up there one day in the free state of Jefferson!

For ducks you should visit refugeforums.net and go to the California forum and ask. Seems like your public land duck hunting is limited up there

I had the opportunity to hunt last season on the San Joaquin River at Jefferson Island. You could see some of the same mountains you can see behind San Francisco. Having hunted all over the south, I can say that it was some of the best I have ever done. Pintails, Mallards, Teal, Woodies, and TONS of Specklebellies. It was just West of Stockton. There were public WMAs around the island. Its definitely worth checking out. Its a whole lot like South LA Marshes, only with Mountains in the background.

You must travel east. From Sacramento to Tahoe there all kinds of animals. Have have customers out there. The husband bow hunts black tail deer.

I've seen tons of turkeys.

I think ducks are between San Fran and Sacramento.

I know a guy that lives in Alturas, CA. That's in the northeast tip of the state in Modoc County. It's BFE, the nearest Walmart is in Klamath Falls, Oregon. He moved there as part of his job with The Bureau of Land Management, and he liked the outdoor opportunities there so much, he remained there after he retired. I know he hunts ducks, deer, and squirrels.

Think that California has more liberal limits for ducks and they also have a very long duck season.

What's up? You've got two other OBers up here too. What part of the bay area?

The hunting is wide open depending on where you go. The fishing is wide open everywhere.

I'm in Sonoma County and we have pretty decent hunting grounds if you're talking private land.

I don't have personal knowledge of the area, but when I move to an unfamiliar place, I generally check in with the wildlife and fisheries folks, as they can steer you to public hunting areas. Also, if you can get in with conservation organizations that usually exist for duck hunting, trout fishing, quail hunting, etc. that usually can hook you up with some folks that share that interest. finally, there are usually sporting goods stores in an area that can share some info to get you started.
