It’s Mandy Landry’s bill but gets you $500 tax credit. I’ve been thinking about buying another safe for ammo. Might go ahead and pull the trigger.

House Bill 247, sponsored by state Rep. Mandie Landry (D-New Orleans) and Rep. Alonzo Knox (D-New Orleans), would allow for a $500 tax credit for those who buy safety equipment. Recent data shows statewide, at least 49 children have died from a gun-related accident since 2015.

Horrible journalism as usual. Credit capped at $500,000 per year on first come basis. They don’t mention that significant fact.

Well crap, I’ll never get that then…

Looks like the first 1,000 filers. And if more than 1,000 file on the first day, then the $500,000 would be prorated between all of the first day filers. Furthermore, requests that exceed the $500,000 cap will be treated as having been applied on the first day of the subsequent year. That will certainly also create a pro-rated situation.
HB 247

Does this only kick in if you owe - reduces payment that you owe after filing taxes? Or does it actually pay you money back even if the state owes you money after filing? I’m in the market for a safe in the next few months.

A bill sponsored by two democrats? Nice attempt at a back door to gun registry. I'm sure all gun safe recipients will be documented. Buy a gun safe, write them down as a gun owner.
Seriously, if it puts a gun safe in a poor family's house and prevents a young child from dying, it's a great move.

$500 tax credit
Pretty much useless when the demographic that needs to do the most here isn't paying much, if any, taxes anyway....

Another gun owner list.

Gun safes are a good idea?

Of course gun safes are a good idea. Keep all but the ones you’ll “need” quickly in there. Have that one in a small quick access safe. Or whatever you like. Also great when leaving on vacation.
