Federal just introduced a new round for the concealed carry market. It’s a 30 caliber that is supposed to deliver near 9mm
Performance with ability to carry more rounds in a smaller gun.

Their 100 gr HST delivers 347 ft lbs of energy as opposed to 364 for
124 gr 9mm.

Fad or staying power?

I think fad.
9 and 45 are/were military cartridges.
40 was cop and fbi.
That’s what people want to buy.

Handgun calibers are weird. The new stuff that comes out is generally "better" than what already exists (10mm then 40 then 357 sig) but seems to only catch with widespread law enforcement adaptation. They went 9mm 40 9mm and the markets followed.

This is the first one strictly marketed for concealed carry so I guess it'll hinge on ammo availability and how many gun options there are.

Interesting but I’d be curious to see the options in single stack concealed guns first. The 12 rounds v 10 rounds of 9mm is an odd comparison, let’s do single stack compact and then larger magazines like 17 9mm maybe gets you 21 30 super?

The price is also going to be a huge drawback, 9mm is favorable because it’s the cheapest to practice with which in turns goes a long ways to comfort carrying.

Minus 15-24 grains.
No noticeable increase of expansion.
Plus 1 inch more penetration
Only add two rounds.
Introduced at a time when you can’t find cheap rounds.

Fad

Looks like a re-worked M1 Carbine.

Why make it .313? Thats goofy almost 8mm size. There's no existing pistol calibers that bore that I know of???

It's .30 Carbine short, essentially.

I guess the marketing research guys think they can sell it.

I think what they've all found out is that it really doesn't take much to develop a "new" cartridge. All it takes is for a few gun rags to pimp it up and they'll make some money on it.

Thats my theory for the flood of new calibers.

It's not like they need to right now. They can't keep the classic calibers on the shelf.

They can make plenty of money pumping out the tried and true. These new calibers are only exacerbating the shortage.

Think about what the latest fad is in concealed carry guns.

Capacity. Hellcat - 12 round, Sig P365 series - 12 rounds with ability to up to 15, etc

In that regard it makes sense.

Not sure it will pick up steam though. There are only 2 or 3 pistols at this time that are chambered in the round.

It's actually the opposite when you think about it. See the adoption comment.

I agree. I can find 350 legend on the shelf but not 270. Not 30-06. Not 30-30. Not 7 mag. No 300. Etc

Who the frick has a 350 legend?

Tons of people have the tried and true calibers that we’ve had and have been working for 50+ years. But gun companies have to fill every single small niche that doesn’t make a damn bit of difference on real world applications.

All of this right here.... It's actually frustrating to me.

because the 40 was the answer to a question that was not asked. its not better than 9mm is some areas and not better than .45 in others.

40 was/is immensely popular, regardless of the merits. Thats due to its very rapid and widespread adoption by law enforcement. Law enforcement is going back to 9mm, likewise the civilian market is.

I think we can all agree that pistol cartridge popularity is directly correlated to law enforcement and military adaptation.

YouTube.

The question is:

Will more than two gun mfg build for it.

The guy in the vid says that it’s for ccw. That means you have to have it made in:

G43
Kahr pm9
Shield
365
Hellcat
Max9
G2c
Etc

And you’re going to add 16% more rounds per magazine. There is little reason to take a g17 from 17 rounds to 20 rounds. This is made for the 6-12 round singles and stagger-magic guns. (Basically takes a p365 from 10 to 11/12 rounds.)

If they build it, you’ve still got a break in period for the mfg to get the guns tuned to this new round.

Collectively the gun enthusiasts WANT to try this out due to recoil and ability to recover. I mean, I want to shoot it for 200 rounds and all.
But are they willing to add a new caliber/holsters/magazines to their portfolio?
