There is your problem. I was shooting the exact same bullet and caliber last year and posted an almost identical story to yours about the same time last year. I shot my target buck last year broadside at 200yds and he dropped like a stone. I start climbing out of my box stand and I see him roll up and get on all 4’s and belly crawl out of my shooting lane. No blood, no deer, searched that night and next day. I swapped over to 150gr Nosler partition this year and they let the blood flow!!

I highly doubt the bullet is the problem. I tend to think it’s a placement problem.

Yea the bullet isnt the issue. .270 wsm is one of my most hated calibers but ineffective is not the word for it. The problem with a head on shot is we tend to shoot low and a little error left or right is a flesh wound.

I shot an old 6 point in the neck once. It went and laid down about 20 yards from where I shot it. My dumb arse was in a hurry b/c Saints were playing that night so I gave it about 15 minutes and went after it. Got down and started walking towards it and fricker ran off. I spent 2 hours on hands and knees looking for it and blood trail stopped. Went out the next morning and still couldn’t find it.

A week later I made a morning hunt and a buck came running full speed through the woods and crashed into a pond. He had marks all over his body with what appeared to be from fighting and was drinking heavily from the water. When he got back on the bank I shot him and dropped him. I walked up and realized it was the same deer I shot a week before. I saw my new bullet hole and the old one and of course knew but the antlers it was same deer. The deer was really blue body color but gray around it’s mouth and old worn down teeth. He was a buck that was probably a good one but had started going downhill.

My first buck was straight on, small-bodied hill country texas deer, basket 8 point. I shot him with 8mm Mauser 180 grain soft point, couldn't have been more centered in his chest. He bucked like a rodeo bronc and bolted out of sight. I found him 50 or 60 yards away, dead. There was no blood, only an 8mm entrance hole. Tore up his insides, but he never bled a drop. I was about 13 and thought he was just going to fall over. When he ran I panicked, got right out of the blind and went looking for blood. I got a lesson in shot placement that day, but would take the shot again under the right circumstances.

Might not be the only problem, but I hope the OP got the message and bought a different box of ammo.

My deer lease is riddled with multiple stories similar to the OP, and 90% share a common characteristic...ballistic tips. Fine for a varmint round, but nothing larger.

My guess is the deer is dead in the creek.

Ballistic Tip bullets were originally lightly constructed. Since then, they’ve been beefed up.
My son used them in his .308 as a kid. All he did was kill several truckloads of deer. No problem with bullet failure.
I use ballistic tips in a 257 WBY (Hog, mule deer, and whitetail doe this year) and in my 300 WBY. No problems if I do my part.

My problem with ballistic tips is they are overkill for me. They cost twice as much and do twice the damage. I’m not taking 300 yard shots where I hunt, so core lokts placed correctly do a great job and don’t seem to mess up as much meat.

My brother was having trouble with no exit wound as well.

This was Hornady light magnum SSTs.

lots of hate for ballistic tips here and many other forums

me personally, I have shot 140 grain Silvertips in 7mm-08 the last 15 years and killed many deer with it never had one run more than 40 yards and most went straight down

the insides are jello when i clean them

they are the most accurate bullet I have shot in my gun and have had great success with them

neck shots and especially head shots are low percentage shots for most people the room for error and wounding one is large

Basically a lot of stupid shot selections and people justifying it is all Ive kinda read here. Those type shots should never be made. Too much risk. Let them walk or wait for the correct ethical and morally sound oppurtuinity

Deer was fine as in no vitals were hit. The leg was just destroyed on the inside. He would have died eventually, but probably from being attacked by coyotes before anything else. Point being it's just not a good place to shoot a deer.

Yep.

OP took a low percentage shot and missed. Those were the 1st and 2nd mistakes.

Any bullet shot into the spine from any direction or shot broadside into the heart or lungs is killing a deer very quickly. A .270 is blowing through a rib no matter what, which means the heart and lungs are toast. There's nothing in front of the spine. So bullet type does not matter for those shots.

ETA: meant to say putting a deer down quickly. A shot in the spine may not kill a deer quickly, but it will be down.

Bullets simply take the blame for a lot of bad shots. I see a lot of guys routinely take high shots or shots too far back and always blame the bullets they use. When in reality they are simply aiming at the wrong spots and missing routinely.

Yall can piss off with that holy attitude. I hunt for the opportunity to take a shot at a big buck. If that shot is head on and I think I can get the bullet where it needs to go I'm taking it, and I'll never judge anyone else for doing the same.

It may be a low percentage shot but seeing the buck you want is a low percentage event. Nothing wrong with trying it.

all depends on the person behind the gun

no worse feeling in the world than shooting a deer and not finding it knowing it's dead or worse suffering due to something you could have prevented by waiting for an ethical shot

And this type of person, hunting method, and mind set is exactly whats wrong with our sport. Hopefully it dies off sooner than later. Almost sounds like you live south of I-10

Hey man frick you! If you think taking a less than ideal shot at the buck you want to kill is "what's wrong with our sport" you're irreparably dumb. The TV shows putting all these ideas in the heads of the 40 acre pine lease trophy hunters is a far bigger problem.

Wow. And I agree this is a terrible stance to have about taking a shot at any animal. Your actually willing to possibly wound an animal to possibly boost your ego and hunting prowess? Someone need to retake basic hunter education class. And we wonder why liberals are wanting more control. This guy is their poster child!

you wouldn't take the shot at a doe but you would at a buck?
