Pretty good article from what I've read. Measures penatration vs expansion.

Not working for me either. I think it's getting an awful lot of traffic right now.

9mm has come a long way since the 40 came out. I have heard some agencies are going back.

i still hear people who carry 40's bashing 9mm though who have no idea what they are talking about
especially when they bring up how "stupid" it is that standard issue is a m9 and it should be a 40
i just think that's misinformed

as for 9mm vs 45 that's completely different, i don't blame anyone for wanting to carry their 1911 over a m9

Not that I really care for one over the other, in this test, the Speer Gold Dot outperformed it's .45 ACP counterpart. I still would feel better carrying something with 200gr +P 45s vs 124gr +p 9s, but facts don't lie.

Bottom line is, a handgun is a handgun and they all suck for putting a man's dick in the dirt instantly.

Start launching 9mm's and .40's out of carbine-style rifles and you can get some good stuff.

Yeah, this pretty much re-enforces the way I have always felt about it. The extra rounds in a 9mm versus a .40 more than makes up for the difference in "stopping power." If a person walks through a 9mm round, is the extra punch of a .40 really going to stop them in their tracks?

Grampa Jones says "Marlin Model 60 or bust."

trying to figure out whether he should use a 9mm or a 40 to shoot holes in the ground and put his dick in the dirt?

The one that I thought was interesting is the average of the .380 vs .38.

I do realize the Buffalo Bore skews the avg though

Part of the reason I switched back to a 9mm from a .40.

Also in the testing I've seen the 9mm shoots through cars better, by a lot actually.

I have been reading the magazine since it came in 2 weeks ago. The article only looks at penetration and expansion and doesn't measure energy. Also, the 9mm includes a few +P rounds which throws off a complete comparison.

It all comes down to your preference. I would prefer the largest caliber I can easy control in the smallest package for carry and for home defense, I want a .40 or greater to backup my 12ga.

Btw, my Kahr p9 should be here today or tomorrow.

This is good data, and is confirmed by numerous other studies. Terminal ballistics (and not much else) matter with handguns. Penetration is the primary consideration, and expansion is a close 2nd.

However, I have yet to determine the time frame in which Mr. Mann did his research. I suspect it was done over quite a few years, only because some of the newer and more effective ammo (Ranger-T and HST) aren't listed (both of which penetrate at least 12" in gel, and both of which routinely expand to diameters greater than double their unfired diameter).

FBI test protocol requires minimum of 12" penetration in 10% ballistic gelatin, with good expansion. (12" in gelatin does not equate to 12" in a human torso). One can quickly see where the smaller calibers, and the Glaser in any caliber, fall short in one, or both, of these criteria.

All he does is show penetration data. There is nothing new here on "stopping power."
