I used water dog back in the late 90’s when I was at LSU and had plenty of time to train my dog. He turned out great. Some of that was due to him having good drive. I never used a collar. I started some of the pressure techniques like ear pinch but stopped there.

My current dog was trained by the breeder/trainer. They solely do British labs and don’t use e-collars. He’s very good…this is his 2nd season and a couple weeks ago I handled him out to 300+ yds on 2 different cripples. I’ve always felt like the relationship you develop with your dog replaces the need for an e collar.

I used the book water dog. Both my dogs were great. E collars tend to break good dogs cause owners over shock them and they forget what to do.

I knew the bat signal would go out to you on a retriever training thread on the OB.

Now let’s debate trials versus hunt tests lol.

Enjoyed the fishing trip btw.

My advice is to pick up Lardy’s Total E-Collar Conditioning dvd. Watch it and make sure you understand it thoroughly.

Shock collars might shorten the process for professional trainers who have no real relationship with the dog other than training. I would never put one of those things on my dog. They are borderline inhumane, imho.

An ecollar is a tool…no more no less. It can be used or misused.

Your opinion is typical of a novice trainer who has no idea what they’re talking about.

But, you do you….I long ago stopped trying to educate “trainers” who already know it all.

I used water dog twice now. Both led to great results.

My current dog I did go with Ecollar to prevent breaking early on retrieves at gunshot. Only took one or two zaps, and then turned off the shocker and just used a vibrate.

Weird thing about how smart dogs are- My new pup gets excited too put the e collar on because she knows it is go time. The two days I forgot the E collar she said to heck with you and broke early a few times She did slam on the brakes and come back immediately when I told her too. But that turd knew exactly what she was doing without the collar!

How about we just use it on children too, it's perfectly humane, right?
Or how about we start shock training human behavior that society dislikes. It's perfectly humane, right?
Maybe somebody should give you a shock when you frick up. It's perfectly humane, right?

Damnit Man, yes it was good trip.
Gave away more help than I think I ever charged for.
HT or FT or Gun, just be honest with your dog and have fun.

I don't care what you think. Certainly not about dog training, raising children, or anything else.

After 45 years of training, running, and judging dogs, I’ve seen a thing or two. And tried every training method out there. It’s a piss poor trainer who doesn’t balance lots of praise with discipline applied fairly.

I hope the OP finds the answer he’s looking for. I’ve referred him to a well respected program that could yield results and increase his knowledge.

Teach first, entrench the lessons thoroughly, and when the dog fully understands the lesson you can enforce with an ecollar. But, you have to read, review, and understand the program first

Glad you’re still around, hope you are well.
OP is falling into the YouTube dog training trap and it’s not going to end well.
Find a Real training program to follow (internet) isn’t a dog training program.
Programs work because they are a step process, complete the steps (building blocks) and when you get stuck someone can work you through the problem successfully. 100% of the time the fix is simple but you have to be able to see and act to get to the next step.
Total Retriever Training “Mike Lardy” spend the money, watch each dvd multiple times, learn something new after each viewing.

Start force fetch with physical pressure (ear pinch) and once that is understood, transition to e collar.

If you are going to force fetch him (which I highly recommend) use Evan Graham methodology Smart Works.

As far as the collar goes, he needs to be collar broken first. He needs to understand pressure and how to turn the pressure off. The collar is pressure.
