Need some advice on purchasing first boat

I have always been able to fish with someone who owned a boat, never had the need to have my own.
My podna and I actually started our own outdoor youtube channel
LINK
(shameful plug)
Anyways he recently traded in his 20' Express for a larger boat so we can get out to blue water and snapper fish this year.
So now we have a need for a boat that we can fish smaller lakes and bayous with.
Question to you guys is since I've never owned a boat, should I go small just to get my feet wet? Or since I've been around boats my whole life and know somewhat what it takes to maintain, should I just go head first and get the big boat with the big engine?
I'm just scared that if I go small I'm going to regret it and have to deal with selling it to go larger. Then again I'm scared to go to big and purchase something say brand new......
Can anyone with past experiences possibly weigh in?

If you go this route, you'll still be getting the itch for something bigger and better

very few times (never) have I heard someone say they wish they would have gotten a smaller boat
it all depends on what your main type of fishing will be and most importantly your budget

another 20ft express would be a good boat for y’all. Your podna already has experience with that type of boat and you could fish, crab, shrimp, out of it on any inshore boat of water in LA

More times than not, you’ll want a larger boat over a smaller boat. Unless you fish skinny waters more so than lakes and such, as I do. Reason I’m fixing to sell my big Xpress haha. Make sure to buy one you’ll be comfortable in the first time. Do NOT buy one that is underpowered per the coast guard tag.

Buy the biggest most expensive most decked out thing that you can just barely afford, otherwise you'll be wanting more.

Just buy the biggest and baddest boat and finance it for 180 months 0 down baw

A 20 ft express just simply isn't going to cut it for you two any longer. I'd look for at least a 22 ft path finder or frontier or sportsman, something of that nature. You'll need a bigger boat to fit all that growing baw swag.

I never heard anyone complain about their boat being too big.

Yes.
Also if you are not in a rush, take your time and find a used boat. You will get a lot more bang for your buck. I searched over a year for my current boat. It you can wait, there are deals to be had.

I’ve heard dudes with Xpress boats have huge dicks

I guess this is based on where you live, and how far you have to travel to fish large bodies of water. I've heard multiple guys I know wish they'd have smaller boats to fish bayous, smaller lakes, marshes, etc. I'm not saying they want to trade their bigger boats for smaller boats, but what I am saying that they wished they had a smaller boat for the above mentioned purpose.
I'm currently on my second boat that I've purchased. I sold the first one to go bigger. I made a very impulsive purchase on that one. I have zero want to go bigger than I currently have. IMO, if you spend some time doing research, and putting in a lot of thought, once you buy the right one, you probably won't have any regrets.

A man in Louisiana needs 3 boats minimum.
One to duck hunt (go devil, surface drive, small outboard, whatver)
One to do regular fishing (a 20 foot bay boat or something)
And one to chase big shite (a 40' center console or a big sportfisher)

Or just have friends with different types of boats than you. I trade fishing trips with friends often. I have an aluminum flat bottom. I have fishing buddies with boats perfect for fishing bass in large lakes and some with boats perfect for chasing trout. Those guys can't go in the places I can, so I try to bring them with me when I can, and they do the same for me when they can. That being said, I can still go in the large bodies of water, but only if the weather is right, which isn't often.

Haha that’s not to far off reality. I’m about to buy a 16’ aluminum boat with a 40hp tiller handle for the marsh.
Then in 2 years a big hybrid bay boat for real fishing. Not an OT baller either. I just hate bum fishing.

This is what I have, only a 25HP so I can go in the Big Burns (Miami Corp.) marsh. That bad boy will do 27mph solo or 25mph with another fisherman with me. That 40HP is gonna roll, son!

Find a buddy with the type of boat you are looking for and pay for gas.

Funny you say that and it kind of rings true. I have a friend who stays in the basin he has a air boat, skiff with tiller and a big semi v with a 150. Then, his son just bought a gtr rig lol.
I was working towards the same, Xpress x19 dual console w/200, picked up a 16x52 w/40 tiller and was looking at a surface drive rig too when I realized I barley fish larger waters enough to keep the x19. Plus, I can get to just about everywhere I care to be with my little tiller rig.
