Build an AR-10.
Bear Creek Lower $269 in stock

Palmetto state upper $519.

Or get it all at PSA.

You can kill hogs with a .17 as long as you aim for the ear.

6.5 Grendel is what I hunt with on my thermal setup. It does the job, but on larger hogs , broadside hogs still run 30-40 yards, using 123 grain SST’s
It’s exciting to see so many sporting the Grendel. It’s my favorite hog round too. Enough power to drop em efficiently, and with low recoil for follow up shots.
For the hogs that run 30-40 yards on broadside shots, where on the hog are you placing the bullets? Just wondering if you are shooting just behind the shoulder like a deer - if so you may be missing the lungs completely on a hog. For a broadside lung shot you have to shoot them through the shoulder, not behind the shoulder. For a quartering-away shot, you can put the bullet behind the shoulder because at that angle it will scramble the lungs. For me, perfect broadside shots I’ll take them just forward of the shoulder where the neck meets the shoulders, about halfway up the body - that’s a spine shot and drops them so fast that they don’t take one step. An ear hole shot is fine too, but hogs’ heads are just about always moving, and if you are off by a couple inches you may miss or injure the hog.

My hog gun is a ruger ranch rifle with a 50 mm Leopol scope for low light conditions

You could kill a grizzly bear with a .22 but should you if another round is available?
Most people that hog hunt are trying to kill multiples. You’re not getting a second eye shot unless you’re Bob Lee Swagger.

Yep, I’ve been shooting them in the lungs like I shoot a deer, just center mass, behind the shoulder. They run off, but, but even in heavy woods, I usually can hear them give a little growl when they expire, so they are usually easy to find. It’s definitely my favorite pig gun, really cheap Bear creek side charger in 6.5 Grendel, with a Nomad L, and it’s amazingly accurate for less than $400.

Do not build an AR-10, they are not built to mil spec like AR-15’s. Meaning most of the time you can’t mix and match parts from different companies. If you go the AR-10 route just purchase the whole gun.

This just isn’t true. I have built 2 AR10’s with no issues. I will say it’s a good idea to buy the same make upper and lower but the majority of the other parts were from 5 different companies. Never had an issue.

Advice if you are new to AR rifles, buy the caliber you want instead of building yourself.
I've built a few and it takes practice and skill to make one run like a sewing machine. Too many cheap parts out there too that can screw your build up.
If I were to build a hog gun only, then I'd go 300BO suppressed sub sonic. Most versatile is 6.8 or 277W.

Yall getting good performance from those slow arse subsonics?

Yes
188gr discreet subs out of a 1:5 twist barrel is devastating.

Sorry, I shouldn’t have said most of the time ...but still “AR-10’s” are not mil spec , some companies use DPMS LR-308 low profile pattern, some DPMS LR-308 high profile pattern, some use the AR-10 Armalite pattern, and PSA has their own pattern. In recent years a lot of companies went with the DPMS high profile pattern, so finding compatible parts is easier but it’s still not like building an AR-15.

Biggest problem with the Grendel is ammo being available during emergencies. After Sandy Hook you couldn’t find much. During Covid it was impossible to get. Buddy bought a Grendel AR in September 2021 to deer hunt. Couldn’t find a single box of ammo for 5 months.
It ain't cheap, but you can get all you want right now. Might as well load up.

I find all the Grendel ammo I need at my local Academy.
