Could probably find a nice .308 for that price

I bought a Ruger in 7-08 this year. Accurate. Killed a hog and two does with it.

I’d like a 308, but this is for kids now and maybe me whenever I’m old

The plan for my son was 7-08 as well, but ended up with a .308. He shot it twice on the day he got it (perfectly) and then killed a buck with it the next day, last weekend. He just turned 11 and had no problem at all.

I honestly have not looked that far into them yet. I did start my google search with "lite", because that's what I recall from the Tikkas and all that popped up was the "superlites".

Son started shooting a Ruger Compact in .308 when he was 7. Killed a couple of truckloads of deer with it as a kid.

Yes and no, the T3x lite and superlite are the same gun except for fluting, but there are some more expensive guns they still call lite - the ones that come cerakoted or with a brake also have a heavier barrel profile. You can tell the difference by the weight and the price tag.

The regular T3 lite is plenty light enough with the extra cost. I'm surprised they sell any of the fluted ones.

They are the same price generally if the fluting is the only difference, the fluted versions are just exclusive to a particular store. Sportsman’s in Slidell has the regular black fluted, cabelas/bass pro has a camo version that they charge more for the dip, etc. Tikka will let dealers order a particular configuration and there will be no mention of it anywhere else. Eurooptic and midway actually carry threaded/cerakoted superlites but they’re the only ones as far as I can tell, and they mark them up too much imo.

Good to know.

As mentioned I went with the lite and it's plenty lite enough. I put a limbsaver pad on it and my 11 yr old can shoot it all day.

Plenty of good recommendations on here. My daughter has the Ruger in 7mm08. very accurate. Shot 2 deer with it. I liked it so much I have a .308 arriving next week. It is the green stock model with 18 inch barrel. Ordered from Tim Star Shooting Range in Oklahoma. Great price. I like a rifle with a detachable box magazine and an adjustable trigger.

I’m planning to pick up the Savage Axis II Pro in 7mm-08 soon. It has a 20” threaded barrel, adjustable trigger and a stock I really like that fits me well.

Need recommendations for a 7mm08

Has the 7-08 not been pushed into obsolescence by the 6.5 Creedmoor, which has the same power in the 100-300 yard range and about the same ballistics but 25% less recoil and more sectional density?

The 7-08 is a great cartridge but 6.5 Creed has the advantage on whitetails and something bigger like .308 Win or one of the 7mm wonder cartridges is going to be better for long range shooting or taking larger animals than whitetails. The popularity of 7-08 is dwindling fast, and I personally would be hesitant to buy a 7-08 unless I already had one and already reloaded for it.

Can we not turn this thread into that?

Not this shite again. They’re the same for all practical purposes, and the 7mm-08 isn’t going anywhere.

Hey be my guest. Pick the one with the same bullet performance but with 25% more recoil.

My son is scrawny 105lbs and shoots my T3 lite .308 easy. I put a limb saver on it also and he can tell the difference. 7-08 is a fine round for hogs and whitetail no doubt. .308 ammo is more readily available cheaper and has more options. We have a 7-08 also but got a deal on the .308. I just got my suppressor installed and haven’t tried it yet but it can thread onto either rifle.

25% of not shite is still not shite, besides the fact that that’s an inflated and cherry picked number. At similar bullet weights and velocities the two will generate indistinguishable recoil, well within the differences you’ll feel due to stock design and gun weight.

Higher sectional density is a well acktuelly pseudo technical term that was made up to sell you a 6.5. It imparts zero practical benefit that can’t be dwarfed by proper bullet construction, it’s no different than arguing for higher frontal diameter as the magic killing factor the other way.

You can always buy low recoil loads as well.
