Guys. With the shutdown we have been fishing alot more than normal and not just boat riding. My wife is getting into bass fishing and needs a reel because her Zebco 33 isn't going to make it if she hooks a big one. I use old school ambassadors because they work and I hate change. So I don't know what is out there for someone just starting out like her. I would like a combo for $100 of less if possible in case she throws it into the water. Also might try to catch some specs and hopefully a red or two if I can learn how. I was thinking Lews but not sure. What do you say?

Get a big one with some heavy line, so you can reel her back in, when she wants to spend too much money on some shoes, or tries to put asparagus on your sandwich.

Shimano Sienna 2500 ($30) mated up to a $30 pole. Super smooth reels for the money and if she loses it, oh well.

Ugly Stik Gx2 spinner combo. Cheap, can take abuse, can handle bigger fish than the zebco.

This or Berkley Cherrywood.

Spinning reel options are endless. I'd suggest a Shimano or Daiwa in a smaller size.

Check out Academy Sports & Outdoors. They have tons of rod and reel combos that will suit your wife's needs, and at reasonable prices.

Lews combo bait casters ftw.
Get in the vacated and teach her how to throw it.

I'm in the same situation with my bride. We went to Academy last week and they had a combo on closeout for $39.99 (Creed Chrome I think) and I bought her 2 of them. She can't or won't listen to me on casting a baitcasting reel so I went with a spinning rig.

I dont want to do spinning. It's like trying to write left handed. So I don't want to impose that on her either.

She might.

Is it just a few times a year or does she go with you often?

smart move, it will save you from spending 70% of your fishing time undoing her birds nests

90% of spinning reels have reversible side cranks

flip the handle around and it reels in the right hand direction just like any other reel

Get her a good combo then. Lews or Daiwa for the reel. You can search Ebay, tackle warehouse, or sportsman's outfitters.

Rod would depend on what stores you have access to.

Do you think light or medium action would be easier to learn on.

ML rod
I know time she will be telling you how to fish like mine does now. It amazes me how mine got her captains license without me knowing.

Lew's American hero series for 60 bucks is a good little reel. My GF uses one.

Just have her start using it with thicker braid and the brakes/tension spool all the way up. As she gets better she can back off the brakes.

Pair that with a 30-40 dollar medium power rod and you should be good to go.

My gf really took to the Shimano Nexave 4000HG on a Falcon Coastal 6’6” rod with 12/50# braid. Light enough to throw a popping cork for specs and enough muscle for reds and mangroves.
