I've been doing similar over the past couple years, but with insects primarily around my property.

In 2024 I documented 328 species. In the past two years I'm up to 513 species.

My favorite this year came late with this....

Southern Plains Bumble Bee:

It is a recent addition to the endangered species list, and is the first such species I've seen.

My overall list for 2024 included: 93 species of moths, 22 butterflies, 38 different wasp species, 37 beetles (including 6 ladybug species), 14 bee species, and many more.

Also included were two native bee species that were the first documentations in the state of Alabama.

A few other random pics:

The look on this Copperheads face is exactly why I do not like snakes. That the kind of look that would having you pay money you didn't even owe.

Awesome finds! Some bugs creep me out - I can’t get close enough to a roach to kill it. My wife kills the roaches. I won’t even remove the dead ones, because zombie roaches come back to life.

Love moths and some arachnids. Here’s a couple cool critters from my West Texas trips:

Black witch moth

Vinegaroon

Cave scorpion eating a centipede

young tarantula

See....the spiders get me that way.

Which is why I didn't mind this ol' girl hanging around for the Summer. I saw her drag three different wolf spiders back to her hole.

That spider is alive, just paralyzed and being dragged by the face to its eventual death.

That’s one of the top places I’d like to hit. I’ve been to a few spots near it, but just never feel safe staying too long anywhere in N.O. East. But snakes love to hang out beneath tin, boards, trash, etc., so I bet Jazzland is loaded.

I didn’t realize Mojave rattlers ranged into Texas…

Are those different than the Mojave Greens out in California?

Little copperheads are ugly, but mature copperheads have a really nice color.

Little

Big

Regardless, they all get introduced to the band saw

I think they are the same - there are a couple subspecies of Mojaves, and I’m not really sure how they range.

I’m partial to big eastern diamondbacks being in north Florida. The only big copperhead I ever saw was north of Folsom. It was beautiful. Perfect camo for clay and gravel roads.

This thread just made every close call I’ve ever had with a snake flash through my mind all at once.

Free handling those venomous snakes while you’re being blinded with some major light in the face? No thank you.

When you are on foot at night, what do you use for illumination? It doesn’t look like you have a headlamp.
