My oldest came from Wildrose kennels in Texas, my female came from a guy near Folsom and my youngest came from my one and only litter. Shorthairs can and do have different traits which can somewhat be predicted based on what you are looking for in a dog and hunting companion. You really need to know what you want from a dog and then find kennels with those traits. That might and might not bring your search out of state...

Wick, are they good to eat? Never heard of anyone cooking them but never hear of anyone hunting them around here either. I've only seen one ever and that was in the woods by my neighborhood a few years ago. Mommy had babies I was actually able to catch one of the babies (let it go of course).

Similar to liver. I like to cook them down in a gumbo...

I find them decent, but others don't. Some love them. Beggers can't BR choosers when it comes to upland birds in the south. Quail are all but gone...

I will hear one every now and then but it increasingly rare. It's one bird that absolutely love to hunt and love to eat even more.

Crazy arse labkin pup I have is now doing this. He started pointing and locking up last week on birds in the yard and when we go for a walk in the woods. He is even trying to climb trees for tree rats.

Killed many when I was a kid. Used to shoot the crap out of them just before dark. When we get a lot of rain and it gets very cold, the woodcock show up big time on my place. Many years ago, one could shoot a 100 easy a day. Not so now.

Terrible eating, tastes like shite. No point in hunting or killing them really

FYI, if you are shooting the dusk flight you are shooting after shooting time. It is a great way to scout for birds...
