Normally the places I hunt I am able to walk power lines, trails, etc and the dogs hunt around me. This is one type of typical woodcock cover I find birds in Louisiana, very thick. On this hunt I already had a limit of birds and was waking out when Jazz went on point. I took the opportunity to video. You can hear the other dogs collars beeping when they started backing.

I know nothing about cock. But why would the bird not just fly away immediately?

Don't like to fly unless they have to. Later in the season when they've been harassed by every coonass with a bird dog in LA they will often run before taking flight.

Looks like a nice area. How many animals do you hunt over?

they get harassed much more where they come from than where they winter....

They normally use their coloring to camouflage in the leaves. They normally hold very well, but also live in places that make it hard to get a shot when they do fly. Here are some pics that I have taken in the past.

I miss woodcock hunting!! Grew up chasing Britney Spaniels thru the woods hunting em from when I was old enough to keep up with my dad and shoot (prob about 9-10) till I was about 17. Fun times!

I get chills every time I bump one walking in the woods and have on more than one occasion instinctively shouldered my rifle on em a few times on the way to the deer stand!

There is really something special about hunting with a bird. Nothing better than watching a dog lock up on point and the flush of a bird from under foot...

I agree with you. With that being said all my woodcock hunting is done on public ground where they do catch a lot of pressure when the word gets out. Learned to think outside of the cutovers.

I've always said that LA woodcock hunters will never put much of a dent in the population. Relatively little public ground that holds woodcock compared to the countless acreage along the rivers that is only deer hunted on, with no doubt countless birds holding on them.

If he used the same handle from forum to forum we know him well enough...

Don't use this handle on any other forum . I'm sure we have stumbled across each other in the woods at some point. I'm not old but I've been at the game awhile. Haha no bird hunters like other bird hunters.

Are you on the woodcock email list?

ETA, what kind of dog(s) do you have?

Not on any email list, I'm in the ostracized group of flushing dog owners.

Dogs look familiar. Looking at your past posts I believe we may have crossed paths on a piece of public ground very near to red stick. If I remember correctly it was as late in the season as it gets

There is an email list that gets sent out every now and then. It was started as a way to keep the woodcock hunters connected when the original RGS chapter folded. There is normally a dinner at the Steamboat in Washington before the season starts and it touches on any important woodcock info like the RGS banquet... email me at wickowick at gmail and I can send you the info to get added.

Been to the dinner multiple times, my dad is on the email list. Will likely see y'all there again this winter.
