I have absolutely zero experience with training pointers. Picking my girl up Dec. 30th then the fun will begin.
I'm just curious if there are any groups down in south Louisiana that are into bird hunting and training pointers. I'm located in Slidell, but willing to trave
What do you plan to hunt with the dog?
And this is worth a read...

We are gonna launch at the north n nature road in lake Arthur and hunt the northern portion of the pool. I'm telling you we are blind to all of the Lacassine Refuge. Hunted and leased near there for years but never fished or hunted or boated on the refuge. This will be the first time and we are solo no guides or experienced folk with us.
I don't have a regs pamphlet near me, but if you are referring to hunting the area known as "The Lacassine Pool" it is strictly off limits to hunting. The NWR website has all the rules listed out and the huntable areas shown on a map, which the majority are south of the ICWW

Find something wet and thick. I don't hunt there anymore so I can't help you out on specific spots. The areas that people will clue you in on will be community holes that get lots of pressure so don't be surprised if you go where somebody recommends and don't kill much.
Woodcock like old ag fields during short periods of their progression. Many times I have busted briars that looked like birds should be there with poor results. Look for their droppings (splash) on the ground for signs that they have been in an area.
Out of curiosity what kind of dog are you running? Most of the places I hunt are dry as the sahara so even if you struggle early, don't give up home for the season. The rain is coming....

not entirely true. GSP's/GWP's are bred to be more versatile than other true pointing breeds. I took mine out a couple of weeks ago. We didnt have any ducks come in but he sat next to me the entire time and didn't move
To the original poster:
I would take the "versatile breeding" idea lightly. I have hunted over a few GSP's extensively but was not the dogs owner, I have only owned flushing dogs. I'm not sure what your plans are for the dog, but my opinion is free so take it for what it's worth.
I would have realistic expectations for what you want to do with a dog regardless of breed. For an amateur trainer to take a GSP and make it an above average retriever, you may have the odds stacked against you. I have hunted extensively over two GSP's in my life, and as many have said they are full of hunt. Both dogs were pointing fools in the woodcock woods and were a joy to hunt over. In a duck blind, they were quite the pain in the arse, but so are lots of retrievers.
Another thing I have experienced with multiple pointing breeds is that sometimes it takes a dog a good while to figure out its purpose. Two of the better pointers I have seen pointed very few birds their first season, but eventually things clicked.
Good luck

The letter seems hugely misguided. What do they want the kids to pursue instead? Law? Medicine? Liberal arts?
A&M is just being upfront with their students, and I guarantee you the clowns at LSU PETE would not have the foresight to do this.
Great post, seems like everyone coming into school wants a PETE degree thinking it automatically=$$$. A large portion will not make it through the curriculum and many that do will be kicking themselves. Takes a lot more than decent grades to get a what I would call a good job in the oilfield right out of school
Here's a few pics of one of my non discriminating hounds. Will hunt most any kind of feather or fur
You've got mail

CENLA Guys
Posted by Becasse on 1/27/14 at 1:48 pm
Have a couple questions about a few clubs that are primarily deer hunters in the Old River (Morganza) area if any of you CENLA guys are familiar with area and wouldn't mind exchanging an email or two.
I am not a deer hunter for what its worth and have zero interest in shooting deer. I'll post my email up if anybody is willing.

Talked with our coonass friend today, he found 1. He talked with our friend the Brittney guy and he isn't finding much either. Very strange...
Y'all are doing it wrong...
Still good numbers of birds down, but they sure are a bitch to hunt at the moment. Luckily I hunt flushing dogs because the birds are very wild at the moment. Had good hunts the last couple days, but it was much better before the thaw...
Good luck tomorrow
I'll be out there looking for them with the four legged demons. Have a "hunch" on where a few swamp bats may be sitting. Nice looking dogs by the way, may cross paths with you at some point. If I'm correct with where I believe a handful of those pics are taken we may frequent the same ground.

Judging from your name, I guess you must hunt Woodcock a bit. Where are other areas that hold this bird that are open to public?
If I was you, I wouldn't fool with cutovers, as they are by far the most pressured cover on a given WMA. Think outside the box, plenty of areas to your disposal along rivers and such in LA and MS.
It is crowded, no doubt about it. Sherburne used to be the place but has gone downhill some with the habitat progression of many of the bird holding areas. With that being said, there are birds to be killed there at times. Have to think outside of the box though. Woodcock can stack up in very small areas, sometimes in the places you would least expect them, especially in heavily pressured areas.
Have run into people from all over the country on Sherburne that made the trek down here to chase birds

Its to bad that the 16 gauge has fallen from popularity. It really is a nice gauge suited for many types of hunting. If lead shot was still legal I have an older Ithaca 37 that would be the only firearm I carried on wingshooting ventures.
FAT NECK
Shut the hell up about public land. Every time you mention the name of a WMA people are going to research it and possibly show up to the area while YOU continue to bitch about public lands being overcrowded. Take your shite back to Louisiana Sportsman forums

Speaking of mud bats, just had one fly over my car...
In broad daylight? very odd...good sign though. Little bit of rain coming through ought to help out a good number of the areas we hunt. Frozen ground up north won't hurt at all either :pimp:

but we also know it they could easily take january away from us...
Tears would fall. Leaves are finally off the trees and its cold so the birds seem to hold tight. Although I have seen a very surprising number of birds in November this year, January is the month in my experience

Or are they all in Webster Parish? I was riding back to the camp and the damn things were about every twenty feet in the mud puddles. Got to where I was trying to hit one just to see how long they'd stay locked up. They'd always bust just right before I could get up to them.
Never seen this many before.
There are no woodcock in LA. The few that make it down here stay unmolested on private deer ground. To all those want hunt woodcock on public land, Arkansas is the ticket.

I will go out on a limb and say where the ducks were seen is the portion of the refuge that can't be hunted.
That damn millet field will be full to the brim with greenheads if we keep getting those periodic rains. Never really have seen any number of them drop in across the road where the masses await though

shite, they are 92 bucks with shipping.
Theres a few companies now that will sell you their rendition of the D-2 that is already cut. Don't know if the Olt that the current P.S. Olt sells is cut or not, but I'm sure you Northeast LA guys have a few people that will cut one down for you. Black Ops duck calls, Kirk Mccullough, and a few others started making similar calls before P.S. Olt started making the hard rubber D-2 keyhole again
