Blue ones face east and get sun until around noon. Sprinkler head hidden in there somewhere.

Purple ones face south and get sun longer.

Thanks gents.

That’s a good one Tideroller! My understanding is that purple means perfectly balanced soil.

I remember when I was a kid we had hydrangeas in our front garden and they produced huge pink bunches of flowers and someone told my mom to dig around the plant and place rusted metal in the soil.

We had a bunch of old rusty nails that I put in the ground and the new blooms came out blue.

My plants die almost to the ground each year. I can’t get them to grow talller. I’m considering completely uprooting them and redoing the bed. My wife would kill to have hydrangeas like that.

RE flowering and growing: I think the location makes a big difference with these. My largest ones face east and only get morning sun and are in shade the rest of the day. I also water 3 times a week or so in the mornings and in the fall let all the leaves drop and compost in place. Finally I remove all the dead blooms later in the year. Beyond that I don’t do anything to them.

Thanks everyone for the compliments.

Those hydrangeas are awesome. This thread makes me sad though - I've got two large hydrangeas up here in OK that had started to bud and then we had a mid-20s hard freeze with ice. The plants themselves are fine but it killed all of the blooms (did a number on a mulberry tree too - no mulberry pie for me this year).

Might hit them with some miracle grow to try and stimulate some later blooming.

The funny thing is we planted another one 7-8 feet away from this one last year and it died. Soil, hydration, etc is the same. Oh, well.

You can't claim your parent's house as your second house

My understanding is if you want pink then you need to fertilize...specifically aluminum sulfate (I think)...

If you want blue then add lime...the iron my work the same as lime maybe.

My family prefers blue and i almost burnt mine up trying to get them pink.

you do have to have aluminum in the soil, but if they are a variety that can be both it is a PH thing.
For blue you will want to have an acidic ph (sulpher will bring it down) and pink you want basic (lime).

I cant seem to get mine to grow big though, but i think it is a sunlight thing. I have a film of sorts on the leaves that looks like fungus.

Now the Limelight (white patented variety) has tripled in size in just 3 months

Get some bloom start, or super bloom. It’ll produce a bloom quick like.

Oh those are doing well.

I planted mine last year, and they died back substantially during winter. I thought they were dead, but ended up coming back, but they are no larger than they were when i planted them.

How old are these in the OP?

mines are doing well, planted just a year plus ago, haven't gotten too much size yet but came back full health from this harsh winter.
