He would have 100% handled that rattler had he seen it before he got bitten

Pretty much every person that handles venomous snakes has a bite story

Sorta like helicopter pilots. Ride in one long enough and you will have a crash story

He MIGHT have handled the EDB had he noticed it first. He’s the guy that taught me how to freehandle, and lesson #1 is that you read the snake’s mood and be selective about which ones you handle. None of his 3 venomous bites have been while handling.

This year I’ve caught 2 Western diamondbacks in the 5-6 ft range. The first one, I knew instantly I could handle it. Not once did it make a defensive move aside from trying to get away.

The second one, there’s not enough money in this world you could’ve paid me to handle without a snake hook. It’s head was turning toward me at every move.

The easiest freehandles have been coral snakes and Ornate black-tailed rattlesnakes. They tend to be pretty chill.

Peeling back the bark helps in what manner?

Scarlet kingsnakes like to hang out behind loose bark…mainly because food (especially lizards) tend to be there.

Where there’s food, there’s snakes.

I find they don't rattle any more or less in areas with or without hogs. Much like before some areas had hogs.

I have not seen an “injured by insured’s own stupidity” exclusion in a health insurance policy yet. Waiting on UHC to add.

My dad always said, "I'm under insured. That way, everyone is sad when I die."

Most folks don't have multiple priors for the same exact stupidity.

When done selectively and with proper technique, snake handling isn’t all that risky. As far as being bitten by an unseen snake like my buddy was, if you put yourself into a snake’s environment, there’s always that risk - but the same can be said for any hunter, hiker, or outdoorsman.

The appearance of extreme risk is more rooted in people’s fear of snakes.

This was a neighbor of mine one at one point, well 1 house away. Baw appeared in a natgeo special in the 90s, shown below.

Maynard was pretty fricking OG in the venomous herping world. Also has been bitten more times than anyone you've known, and none were random I walked up on one, in piss poor excuse for safety gear.

Refer to my previous comment on gear. I live on a couple dozen acres, have had a dog take a near fatal bite to the head. I'm quite aware of their existence, and plan accordingly.

You definitely need to watch the video, most notably 38-45 seconds in

I will no longer do it. I have just seen too many slight lapses result in terrible things. No longer worth the risk to me.
