Thats awesome. Turkeys make grown mean do bad things. Have you ever specifically hunted them?

If not, I/someone else in this thread will more than happily come call for you and show you why we will let those 3yo bucks walk all day long.

I have years ago when I was a kid.

These turkey are on a club and the 5-7 people that hunt them would burn my camp down (not really) if I dared say to start bringing guest to Turkey hunt.

Like i said--turkeys make grown men do bad things lol.

Get back after em! Any time outdoors is better than at the house!

I’ve never really turkey hunted, but seeing a turkey in the fall is like seeing a buck in May.

Seeing a rutting Buck in November running, chasing and aggressive can be a similar hunt to a gobbling Turkey in full strut in the spring.

I haven’t really turkey hunted since I was a teenager because of dirt bikes and work. That is all changing and I now have to miss opening weekend on my place because of a death in the family. I’m greatly looking forward to next Saturday morning:

Baws, I got my first ever turkey this evening. A 20.2 lb Eastern with a 10” beard. I’m ecstatic. I hit the slate call around 5, and he blew me up with an unexpected gobble.

Congratulations.

Anybody have luck this morning? Crappy conditions here but I had one gobbling his head off. Probably heard him gobble 20 times and I left him at 7:20ish. I was just listening and was pretty surprised to hear one.

He must rule that part of the property. I have seen 5-6 gobblers in that area on camera this spring, but he was the only one gobbling it seemed.

I got within range of SIX gobblers in 2 separate incidents and fired 0 shots.

First group came in with hens fired up strutting their stuff. 3 hens passed giving me good shots. The only shot I had on a gobbler was about 45 but it was 2 stacked up both strutting. They eventually all moved off (with a 4th hen I think) and I was unable to relocate.

At 11:00 I struck a gobble in a different spot a few ridges over. Made a move to get around. Called. Gobble. Crept up a touch. Heard him drum. I froze. Putt. Putt. Hen with them saw me and they all blew up

Fun… lol

Those near misses and the work put into it are why I love turkey hunting so much more than any other type.

Birds are smart and wary, and you have to stay active and not shoot yourself in the foot.

You can get lucky on many an occasion and be in the right place at the right time, especially after pattering a gobbler for a while, or just get some young turkey, but, more often than not, nothing is a given with turkeys in areas with high hunting pressure

Tough opener in SW MS

Had a couple gobbling Saturday morning, one very close.
I went and set up decoys in a field close to where I heard the gobble.
As I was setting up decoys, I busted a few turkeys off the roost 50-60 yards from the field edge, but the gobbler wasn’t one of them. He kept gobbling and flew down at some point.
Around 8am a shot goes off close to me and towards where I heard the bird.

Around 9:30 a hen flies down and lands in the woods across the field from me and close to my decoys. She starts yelping like crazy and goes the complete opposite direction of me. After a few minutes, I hear another gobble. That hen went straight to him, yelping the whole way. He gobbled on and off from 9:45-11am.
I did call in one Jake.

Saturday afternoon I had someone who hunts differently join me, no decoys!
We walked towards where I heard the last gobble, soft calling here and there.
Didn’t hear or see anything until a random distant gunshot made the bird gobble. We headed that way and set up in the hardwoods where we heard the gobble and where we saw some fresh tracks.
Nothing.

Sunday morning we heard 2 gobbles as soon as we hit them with the owl call. Same general location from the day before but closer.
We didn’t want to hit the field again since they sounded like they were close to it.
Tried to work around a bottom that leads to the field and set up. They gobbled hard from the roost. Eventually we hear them fly down and gobble. They headed the complete opposite direction of us, same as the day before with that hen. We tried to move and see if we can cut them off, but we were too far behind em. They gobbled a few times but eventually went quiet around 8am. We pulled out because we thought it was gonna start pissing rain, but we probably could have hunted another 1.5-2 hours.
I left after the morning hunt, but now I wish I would have stayed since the weather cleared up.
Really thought we’d get one this weekend but that’s part of it!

I killed a good one Saturday @ 4:15. Got on him that morning and ultimately called the lead hen (6 hens) in that afternoon. He strutted all the way to 25 yds following his ladies.

10” beard and 1.25” spurs

ETA - Madison County

UPDATE:

We got up and out there just before first light. we heard plenty of gobblers but they were ways away. My brother and my other buddy had 4 gobblers around them when they set up (southern side of property). Then the neighboring property owner shot one and then they went dead quiet (the shot was maybe 400 yards from them). they said if the neighbor didnt shoot they for sure would have had one come in.

Where i was at, we saw a hen and then it was slow after that due to the fog that rolled in and nasty weather. after that we switched tactics when the sun came out and called in different areas. nothing.

I will say, that was a lot of fun for my first time going. i enjoyed hearing those birds gobble even tho they were far away. it was a blast and i will try and go again!

There's no "for sure" in this game baw until he's for sure dead and in the truck.

Slow for me. Two hunts on public with no gobbles heard. Probably go again in the morning.
