During the 2019–2020 hunting season, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) has collected more than 5,000 samples for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) testing across the state. However, sample numbers are lower than expected for counties in the North MS CWD Management Zone. Since October 2019, 25 CWD-positive deer have been detected from this zone. To obtain additional samples, a 2-day February special season was set during the January meeting of the Commission on Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks. The proposed season includes:

Special Season
All counties included in the North MS CWD Management Zone
February 8–9, 2020 (Saturday/Sunday)
Mandatory CWD sample submission on day of harvest for all harvested deer
Existing CWD drop-off freezers may be utilized
1 physical check station will be in each of the five (5) CWD-positive counties
Legal weapons:
Weapon of choice may be used on private lands.
Primitive weapons may be used on Graham Lake, Hell Creek, Malmaison, O’Keefe, Tuscumbia Unit 1, and Upper Sardis
Muzzleloader/Youth Gun on Charles Ray Nix and Tuscumbia Unit 2
No other WMAs are open for deer hunting during this season.
Still hunting only on public and private lands
Bag Limits (in addition to regular season)

Private Lands, Upper Sardis WMA, and Holly Springs National Forest
2 bucks (1 buck per day and 1 may be sub-criteria)
5 does

Wildlife Management Areas
2 bucks (1 buck per day and both must meet antler criteria)
5 does

Further information will be available at physical check station locations and on the MDWFP website. Kill all the deer to eliminate CWD. Hmm.

It's been proven not to work at all yet every state still wants to keep doing it.

I’m not sure the intent is to kill a bunch of deer here. If it was, they’d open the season up for more than 2 days. I think they just want to gather more samples (since sampling was low) to find out if the CWD has spread, and if so, then where.

Exactly. People in those areas are not turning in samples. People want to pretend it doesn't exist because when it becomes a reality it will change a lot. Property values, deer population and management.

Yes reading comprehension is severely lacking. It clearly says it is to collect more samples since the ones during the season were low. CWD make people more retarded then it does the deer.

There was a really good turnout last year in my area, both Pontotoc and Union counties turned in a good many samples. The “problem” is that there weren’t any CWD positive results, so the mindset has been that this whole thing is a farce and there’s nothing to worry about. It’s unfortunate, but people around here just aren’t proactive types. And they’re lazy. And stupid.

Perhaps sampling is low due to drop off locations. In the Jackson metro, you need to go way north of town to drop one.

Some areas it is a bit of a PITA to get to a drop off station this year, depending on where you're headed back to/from.
Last year, they had more and several manned ones. It was definitely more convenient in year 1

I would not eat one from that area without having it tested first. I know people say it doesn't cross over but other similar diseases have crossed to humans like Mad Cow disease. And they seem pretty unsure about the entire disease, in general.

Yeah, I don't worry too much about it transferring to humans, but I'm not going to eat one or feed it to my family without having it tested. I couldn't live with myself knowing it could have been avoided, if that tiny chance indeed happened down the road.

How are the processors handling this?
If they process one +, they contaminated all behind it potentially that is.

When it moves to my area, I am getting all tested and self-processing.

Probably already in your area. And CWD animals probably have already been dropped at your processor.

You are probably right. But, I am tricking myself into thinking I am good until one tests positive there.

I would think when it jumps it won't be human consumption, but rather parasite born (think ticks)

It has existed for years. They are blowing this way out of proportion.

It has not existed in all the places it is now for years. They can estimate when it gets to an area and how long it has been there.
