MORGANZA TO THE GULF

Ran across this article and wanted to see what the OB thought. Looks like potential for added flood protection infrastructure in Terrabone parish and deepening of the Houma Nav.

The Army Corps would need to expand its re-use of dredged material for coastal restoration projects. The agency would also need to begin disclosing internal costs and expenses.
a lot more USACE BUDMAT projects have been delivered as of late. Look to Venice for a most recent example.

Terrebonne parish has been building scaled down versions of the Morganza levees as well as putting in flood gates for the last few years. That is the reason Terrebonne parish has one of the highest sales tax in the nation at 10.5% they didn’t feel we could wait for the feds so began working on it on our own.

Terrebonne and the state have permitted, procured real estate, and built to get to the states 20% match for MtG.

They arranged it that way to remove all excuses for the corps to refuse to fund.

they also arranged it to where now every camp south of the levees floods with a slight south wind.

As we speak, our camp in Dulac has 3" of water over the property. this never happened before the levees.

Plus, those frickers on the levee board can't wait to close flood gates at the drop of a hat, causing additional flooding for anyone unlucky enough to own below it. They almost closed it yesterday.

ETA: why does the HNC need to be deepened? What effect will that have on Terrebone Bay and Lake Pelto?

there's millions of people living and working behind those levees, but by all means, cry about not being able to get to your camp sometimes.

wait so you are upset your land is flooding when it is in a flood plain?

because if they didnt people like you would sue when they flood.

well you are outside the flood protection system. you sound like the people that bought land in the spillway for dirt cheap then get pissy when the spillway opens and floods.

South Terrebonne Parish camp owner for decades here. Your comment is short sighted at best and negligent at worst. Your view point is the reason we can't govern by common sense.

I get both sides.

My camp is on the south side of Bubba Dove too, and places like Four Point have completely lost their value.

Most camps are high enough not to be damaged, but that doesn't help the vehicle you drive to get there.

With what I've seen in my lifetime from the barrier islands and the coastline, there won't be anything of value south of those locks when my kids are my age.

Explain. These levees have changed the water levels in the marsh significantly. I'm all for protecting the people in Houma but what about the ecosystem?

Also, please explain why there was ever any need to even consider closing the bubba dove yesterday. I'm not trying to get in a pissing match. Just reporting what I see on the ground (water)

Ah Hammertime here with a Hammertime type post.

You don't understand. It is almost ALWYAYS flooded anymore.

the marina at 4 points gets a foot of water when the wind blows south for more than two days.

They are closed arbitrarily. South wind and high tide, hell, sometimes I don't have a clue why they were closed, but it changes the water level up to 2 feet under normal conditions where I'm located.

this...they have been working on that floodgate by Flagoust Canal Marina for at least a year...and all the dredging they've been doing in Lost Lake and Sister Lake is fricking up all my fishing

and as of yet, I've only received snarky responses and ad hominem attacks. No one has explained why my comments are short sighted and "negligent."

I also have a marsh camp where I have spent a whole lot of time. the only time he water would go over the dock was for a nearby storm. Now, the water is over the dock consistently.

Until they gate off the intracoastal east and west of houma they are trapping the water behind those gates and forcing it to seek new ways around. The levees help some areas and make others that haven’t had problems before an issue. I decided to leave south LA for Mississippi this year. It was a hard decision but I feared Terrebonne parish wasn’t somewhere I wanted to be 20 years from now.

I'm not in the marsh.

I'm located in the Sunshine Loop. Our water access is approximately 12 steps from the back door of the camp.

We were grandfathered in and still on the ground. Strictly a dude camp, so I'm much less invested than those around me.

But, some of the guys around us have had vehicle damage. Those that are residents, instead of camps, have had to obviously make arrangements.

I bet if SoCo had to deal with the closing of the locks, it would be different.
