State officials will now be able to look at new proposals to create artificial reef sites in the Gulf of Mexico after a moratorium on building them was lifted earlier this month.

The Louisiana Artificial Reef Council on April 10 approved ending the moratorium, which was originally set in place in 2008. Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries officials said there are unique opportunities for creating reef sites for fish habitats that should be explored under improved guidelines.

Oilfield companies are generally interested in creating these sites because that is cheaper for them than pulling the platform out of the Gulf and taking it to shore, he said.

The main reason for the moratorium was because these reefs would take away spots for shrimpers to fish, but the amended plan should help to prevent that problem, McDonough said.

If that was the real reason,

Artificial reefs have so many benefits. I cannot believe that the above reason for the moratorium is real. It just can't be.

Wow, some semblance of common sense returning to the government. I like it.

This is great news. We have lost so many rigs out there and this will give some good spots to dive and fish. More home land for those endangered snapper to live.

That's a bit of a reach.

Do the oil companies just remove the platform and keep legs to a certain depth or the entire platform structure remains?

During the moratorium, the whole thing was removed. Now they can petition to leave parts in place or have it moved to a place that is situated for optimal environmental benefit.

We have already seen a few of these proposals come through this year where we haven't seen any in a long time, besides alabama.

This is why the oil companies hated it. If they had to remove the whole thing, they might as well just take it in and scrap it. I would think they would much rather cut them about 40' below the surface and let the top lay down right next to the legs underwater.

I remember a rigs to reefs program that was successful in LA during the '80s.

Heard that last week. We are actually working on permits to place one of ours as a reef that is coming out of MC. Jindal raided the Rigs to Reefs fund multiple times (had close to $25 million when he first stuck his fingers in). Then Hussein cut contracts for removal with some of his financial contributors and forced an acceleration of the demonlition schedule claiming environmental concerns. Of course, the idiots in his administration might not have really understood the difference between a working rig and one that's idled and closed.

The federal govt does not contract for removal of O&G structures, the owner/operators do (unless every company that was ever associated with the rig is no longer in business)........

He greatly accelerated the decommissioning and removal. Research his campaign contributors for more. Big Oil certainly didn't want this.

Believe it or not, football isn't the only thing Alabama kicks the country's arse in. Our state has been building reefs since the 70's.

There are literally hundreds and hundreds of them listed on the state DNR site.

Everything from rock piles to tanks to bridges to sunken ships.

If Bama claims reefs like they do national championships, y'all must have millions of reefs.

All kidding aside, I think it's great for any state to take the initiative to do these reefs. They see the amount of revenue that fishing brings to the coast and want to reinvest. Instead Louisiana just takes away money.

Anyone know who is over those snapper mounds being built in grand isle right now?

That fund had over 60 million in it when Piyush started raiding it.

Florida dumped a bunch of tires to help build reefs a while back. It ended up killing a bunch of their reefs.
